    Six week old Orpingtons

My six week old lavender and blue Orpington chicks are feathering up quite differently. 2 have tails while the two I suspect might be roos due to ever so slightly larger and pinker combs have almost no tail at this stage. Is this a thing? I've already culled two that sprouted big red wattles...

    Gender of this cross breed?

This is my 12 week old Wyandotte cross (possible fathers are leghorn, light Sussex and Wyandotte) the comb and wattles made me think female but the one tail feather being so long and pointy has me second guessing. I've had a close look for pointy saddle and hackle feathers but they are still...

Day old chick with hurt legs

I have a day old chick that won't stand up (was doing fine this morning) but now has both legs curled up. Both hocks look bruised and I can't get it fully extend its legs with just gentle pressure. One side is worse than the other. They aren't obviously swollen though and I can't feel any...

    pale comb and panting?

My young broody hen just hatched her first lot of chicks yesterday. Today I noticed her comb is very pale and she had been panting or just hanging her mouth open. It was a little warm today but not over 18 degrees. I'm paranoid she'll drop dead! I've been offering her water and food and she...

diff colored eggs from same chicken??

I'm trying to figure out which hen is laying the green eggs. I have three barnyard specials. The one I was almost sure it was just laid a nice cream egg! They can't change egg color can they?

    culling chicks...

How do people cull chicks? I'm proficient at slaughtering grown birds with a killing cone but if I want to cull little cockerals how should I do it? Sorry to ask such a gruesome question.

    breeds for pin feather sexing?

Hi I'm wondering what people's experience with pin feather sexing has been like and with what breeds? I'm especially curious if it can be done with RIR, Ancona, Wyandottes, light Sussex, Australorp, and Orpingtons.

how old before harvesting cockerals for the pot?

I got a flock of 8 chicks that are now 8 weeks old. Unfortunate it looks like 4-5 of them are roos (I'm in denial about one because it's my favorite) we are planning to eat them and I'm just wondering when we should go about that? When do they reach full size generally? They are just barnyard...

    dumb question?

So I'm just wondering something really basic.... If you have a flock of various colors but all the same breed (I'm fascinated by beautiful Wyandottes for instance) is that okay? I mean breeding wise do the offspring take after one or the other parent in coloring? Or do you have to breed same to...

    chicks not roosting?

I've got 6 weeks old chicks in a growing out pen. They have a roost in there that they LOVE. But only during the day. At night they sleep in a nest pile in the corner. Is this a problem? Are they too young to sleep roosting? Is it a problem if they prefer to sleep on the floor?

    ambiguous gender chick

This is a six week old mixed ee/rir/silkie chick. It doesn't look like any of its siblings as far as comb go. The boys have obvious dark pink three rowed pink combs and the girls have flat yellow single row peas combs. Whats going on with this one?! Boy or girl?
