Well, I don't know if this is current or is an archive, but I'll take a chance.
I have decided to take a long road trip so I need to sell my hens.
I have 3 Golden sex links who have been laying about 2 months.
I have 1 Barred Rock who started laying about a month ago.
I have 1 Wyandotte Mix...
So my three sex link hens have been laying now for weeks.
I got all 5 hens at the same time and they were SUPPOSEDLY the same age.
By my accounting, all should be 23 weeks old now.
The Barred Rock and the Blue-Laced Wyandotte (cross?) have not yet laid.
Here are photos of their heads. They are...
It's supposed to get up to 106-107 by midweek here in a bizarre heat wave.
I'm really worried about my hens. Not sure what I can do to help them through it.
Any advice?
Hi, so I got en email today. My neighbors are complaining about flies.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?
My chickens are in a large run with wood chips covering the run.
is that normal???
I've taken out the dead ones and a couple of pieces of apple.
Do I need to (somehow) sift them out and start with new substrate???
1. Best way to get them out? A sifter doesn't work. The screen is too small
2. How often do you put fresh fruit or vegetable in??
I lead groups on the Camino Santiago each year, and next season in May, I will be gone for 4 weeks.
I will depend on a roommate to care for my chickens.
I KNOW he isn't going to want to go out there morning AND evening to feed.
And I worry he could occasionally forget.
Are there steps I can...
So I had been letting my little flock of 5 hens out to free range in my yard an hour each day.
I did this the other day and got called away and forgot about them.
They nearly RUINED my beautiful back yard lawn.
Now, I"m keeping them cooped up in a fairly large run, but without green stuff...
I bought these hens June 7, about 5.5 weeks ago.
When I bought them, the fella said they were 5 months old.
But now I'm realizing they were much younger, because I'm looking on YouTube at 20 week old hens and they already have red combs and wattles. My girl barely has a pink comb. And she's...
I was told she was a blue-laced wyandotte but she doesn't look like any photos I've seen. She is the same age as all my other hens, but doesn't seem to be getting a comb or wattle. What IS she?
All of them are around 24 weeks old.
In one photos she is between my sex-link and my barred rock.
In...
I'm feeding my new pullets organic layer pellets.
They were used to completely free ranging, but now I have them in a coop and run.
They'll get a bit of garden leftovers, but not a lot.
How much feed should I give (per hen) each day?
When is the best time to feed?
By the way, I will NOT be...
Hi. I'm Rowan from Portland, Oregon.
I was a member a couple of years ago, then took a break to care for family and travel and because RATS drove me out of the chook business. Now I'm back with three new chickens. They are 20 week old Gold Sex Link pullets. I've never had this breed so I'm...
Hi there. I'm returning after a 2 year hiatus. Happy to be back.
I bought 3 pullets today said to be Gold Sex Links. I got them at a good price but was a little sad after doing some research and learning they only are expected to live about 2 years. But, live and learn. The guy was awfully...
Any help I can get guessing whether these are pullets or roos would be great!
What do you think?
They were 3 weeks old on Sunday.
By the way - some of the wings look funny because I clipped their wings today.

Chick2 - Black Copper Marans...
My chicks are a week old yesterday.
I have 5 Black Copper Marans, 2 Mille-Fleur Leghorn Crosses, and 1 Americauna.
I tried to take photos this morning.
They refused to look at the camera. ::laughing::
Any guesses as to Hens or Roos?

I recently bought a dozen fertile eggs from a neighbor lady who runs a small "store" out of their home. The eggs hatched well - 8 out of 12.
However, when I was there, she talked me into buying feed from her. I bought a 50 pound bag of non-GMO feed from her. My hens were used to eating...
My mama hen is in a 10 x 10 run and house with her 8 chicks.
My other two hens are put into an adjoining run during the day.
All three hens used to be there together and all love that space because it's under grapevines and shady.
Because I've been told the regular laying pellets are bad for...
So I figured out how to catch rats around the chicken coop.
Buy one of these:
It's called a VICTOR Electric Rat Trap.
Did it catch a rat for me?
No, but I finally broke down and ordered one from Amazon last night for $40 and last night I caught a rat in my snap trap!
All it took was...
