    chickens' first snow

The chickens awoke to their first snow this morning. They don't want to come out of their coop to eat and drink in their run, however. Only a little snow made it into the run (it is mostly wrapped in plastic). Are they likely to get over their fear and come out to eat and drink soon?

    mulched leaves for winter run?

We have an enclosed 5x10' run with a roof for our three chickens. Since we got them in the spring, we have used a combination of pine shavings and sand in the run. I scoop out droppings every day or two, and so far maintaining the clean run has been super easy. For the winter (snowy) months...

    Delaware and Welsummer - Roosters?

These are 15 weeks old, and the only ones of my 5 pullets that are significantly red in the face with large-ish wattles and thicker legs. Do they look like they might be roosters, or are they just getting closer to laying?

    Delaware won't roost

I have a 15 week old Delaware who won't roost on the perch with the other hens at bedtime. The perch is 2 feet off the coop floor, and all but one of the other hens are also heavy breeds, and they have no problem hopping up to the perch. I added a "booster" perch some 6 inches off the ground...

    mite confusion

So... my chickens are 13 weeks old, and have been in their coop and run full-time for just a few weeks now. Today, while cleaning out their coop, there were several (a dozen?) red/ orange mites in their bedding. On closer inspection, I noticed that these mites were active all around the run...

Can I use sweet pdz in with young chicks?

My chicks are here, all safe and sound from Meyer Hatchery. They were on paper towels for the first full day, and this morning I put down some pine shavings. Is it ok to put down some Sweet PDZ, too? If they eat it, would it just be like chick grit (which I do not have on hand here, yet)?

Question about using cinder blocks for coop and run

I'm still in the planning stages for our coop (though hopefully will start building soon!) and was wondering about burying cinder blocks around the perimeter of the coop and run to keep predators/ pests out. The coop and run area will be approximately 10 x 5 for a maximum of 6 chickens (the...

    New here!

New to BYC here and looking forward to brooding chicks and building our backyard coop this spring (as soon as the snow melts and the ground thaws!). I have ordered 3 female chicks (plus a Meal Maker) from Meyers. I was hoping to find a hatchery closer to home here in Iowa so that I wouldn't...
