Our chick was attacked, missing some skin on it's neck, need some care advice!

We have a broody hen caring for 5 chicks (about 3 weeks old), and they are currently separated from our two other birds, a hen and a rooster. One of the chicks managed to get through our barrier, and was attacked while we were out today. We came back to find that either the hen or the rooster...

    Momma hen attacking her chicks

Our mother hen is now beginning to attack her chicks (5-6 weeks old). Enough that one of them is now bleeding on his neck. I have Momma and the other hens free ranging away from the chicks right now, but at night they all sleep in the same coop. How do I keep the hen from further injuring the...

    Male or female?

Our 3 chicks are about 6 weeks old, and we're wondering what their sexes are. My husband thinks the black&white (barred rock mix) and yellow&brown (easter egger) are males, but since all our hens had large crowns at this age, it's hard to be sure. I can add more pics if needed. Thank you! [/IMG]

Can we give a new chick to a hen with 2 week old chicks?

Hi all, I posted before about whether to tell if an was still viable or not. I checked it today and saw movement! Now here's our issue: Our hen already has 3 hatched chicks, which are about to be a week old. This chick, based on the candled pics I saw online, has another week or so to go...

Viable egg at a little over two weeks?

Hello! We have a bit of a situation and don't know how to proceed. One of our hens went broody, and while we were getting things together to separate her from our other hens, our other hens laid a few under her. She has 3 hatchlings right now, all 3-5 days old, and still had three unhatched...

Introducing our 11 week old pullet to 23 day old chicks

I posted before about how and when to introduce our pullet to some new chicks. We bought the chicks two days ago, and currently have them in a large, plastic dog kennel in the sun room, where our pullet frequents to eat and drink, and where she currently sleeps at night. It's been suggested to...

New chick appears to have feathers pecked off? Advice on care?

So we finally went to buy new chicks so our lone PeekABoo wouldn't be lonely. We realized one of the chicks has this bare patch, and was told that the there is a chick in the brooder pecking at the others. Our question is, how do we care for this? Do we leave it be? Put antibiotics on it? TIA

How soon can we introduce new chicks to our lone 9-10 week old pullet?

It looks like we'll be able to get new chicks sooner than expected (which we're excited about). Our current lone chick is about 9-10 weeks old, and I'm trying to figure out the timing of when to get the new chicks and when to try to integrate them into a single flock. We're looking to get 3-4...

Tips for using a plastic dog kennel as a coop?

Since we only have our one chicken for the time being, I'm thinking about using our dog's unused, large plastic kennel as a coop... I was thinking to place newspaper on the bottom and have hay in the back as bedding. Our 8-9 week old pullet would only be in the kennel/coop at night. Would this...

Need clarification on make a dust bath with DE?

Hi everyone! I've noticed our chick trying to dust bathe herself on our couch, so I went to our local supply store and got DE. Upon reading many of the threads, it looks like we aren't supposed to have just DE in their dust bath (due to possible respiratory issues)? Do I just mix it with dry...

Chick only eats crumble when wet or damp...

Our 4-5 weeks old chick will only eat her crumble when it's at least damp... is this an issue? We do allow her outside for up to an hour on warm days to get her used to being outdoors, and she's eating small bugs, worms and grass as well. Can we keep giving her the damp crumble or do we need to...

Is it possible for a hen to "adopt" chicks?

Hi everyone! Our little girl is only a few weeks old, but we're already discussing getting more chicks- partially so "PeekABoo" won't be alone, and also so we can start getting eggs. Would it be possible to somehow have PeekABoo "adopt" any chicks we get? Maybe get fertilized eggs, have them in...

Need help determining breed, age and possible sex of adopted chick

Please help us figure out what kind of chicken this is... We adopted it after finding it abandoned on Easter. We're guessing it's an Easter Egger, about 4-5 weeks, possibly female? Thanks in advance...

Month old chick with air bubble on right side

Hi everyone, We adopted an abandoned feral chick on Easter. It appears to be about a month old now. We noticed that it has an air bubble on it's right side, where it's wing attaches to it's body. It doesn't appear to be in any discomfort- eats, drinks normally and is very energetic - except...
