    Keeping chickens in the yard?

Well my chickens were completely free range in my back yard, but liked to sleep on my porch. So I put a light in the coop and cooped them up for a week and they have been succesfully retrained to sleep in the coop. However, while they were in prison I put up a fence around the coop and opened up...

Re-training Chickens to sleep in coop?

When I only had 5 chickens it wasnt too serious but since getting 16 new additions, the poop on the porch has gotten out of control. I prefer to free range and after 3 years of having chickens Ive never lost 1 to a predator so I hate to lock them up, I just need to train them to sleep in the...

    Lethargic Chick! Please help!

Hi everyone, I have a 10-11 week old EE pullet that has been acting lethargic the last 2 days. Everyone else is happy and healthy in the flock she's 1 of 16 of this age. She's normally pretty stand off-ish compared to the other but when I noticed how she was acting I picked her up with no...

    Easter Egg Pullet or Cockerel?

Well I bought 8 sexed EE "pullets" from a local feed store but at 4/5 weeks one of them is starting to look a bit different from the others. Feathers aren't coming in as evenly and it's comb seems a bit pinker, stance seems a bit taller, etc. Any opinions?

Hampster Bath Sand for Baby Chicks?

So I have some left over "Critter Bath" from when we had a hampster and I have read about a lot of people giving their chicks access to a dust bath at just a couple weeks old so I wondered if this would work for them as well as it does hampsters. My concern is that they will eat it rather than...

    Any Guesses Yet?

I recently bought 8 straight run speckled sussex chicks. Going off the assumption that they were 1-2 days old when I got them, they would be about a week old today. Might be a bit early to tell if they are pullets or cockerels yet but I plan on taking daily pictures of them and posting the...

Can anyone tell me if these are true Aracuana chicks?

Just bought 8 "Aracuana" and 8 Speckled Sussex chicks from local Co-Op. From what I've researched a lot of feed stores sell EE as Aracuanas. I've done quite a bit of research on the breed but still having difficulty pin pointing what exactly the chick's look like at a few days old. Can anyone...

    Raising "Aracuana" and Wyandotte Chicks

So I'm finally going to get my first batch of babies in the morning. I've had chickens for a few years now but this will be my first time raising day old chicks so I have a few questions I was hoping to get some advice on. I'm buying them from a local farmers co-op here in Virginia and they are...

What breed of rooster should I get?

I currently have a mixed flock of 5 hens (2 Australorps, 1 NH Red, 1 Barred Cochin, and 1 that I'm pretty sure is an EE). A few of my favorite breeds I'd like to integrate are Wyandottes (love their feather pattern), some colored eggs layers (prefer some blue or green shades),possibly a couple...

Giving chickens free range of a garden with raised beds?

My girls have always had free range of the place but recently i have put up a fence segrating the goats from the back yard so they don't have access to my back porch. Trying to decide the location of new coop. My 2 options would be to keep them in the back yard or the pasture with the goats...

Mixed Flock, Any guesses what breed they are?

All of my girls have been given to me by different people. They were not sure what breeds they are so I'm not 100% sure either, just curious if anyone has a guess. Ruby was my first chicken: White with a red comb, fairly large chicken, and lays a hearty size off white egg. Henny Penny is the...
