Adding a new chicken - disease concerns, and what meds to keep on hand?

The more I read about illness the more concerned I am about adding a new rooster. Our current rooster attacks us at times so we are getting ready to dispatch him and get a new rooster for our 6 hens. All were hatched in early April. A local farm rescue has roosters - I'm assuming if I adopt one...

Crumbles or Pellets? Problems we are having -

What age are your chickens and what do you feed them? If you feed a commercial feed is it crumbles or pellets? Ours are 9 weeks old now and eat a crumble grower food. They make a huge mess even with PVC pipe feeders and the crumbles get stuck in it. We have to bang on it to get it to fall. Any...

    Black Australorp hen or roo?

She is supposed to be Monica, but I have a funny feeling she is really a Joey (Friends characters :) ) All of these were purchased on April 8th from a hatchery and 1-2 days old (so 8 weeks old currently). These pictures are from barely 7 weeks old.

What type of pine shavings should I be looking for? Big chips or 'shavings'?

Big sale at the local farm store tomorrow on shavings, but it seems to be only the 'shavings', not the thin chips. What type of shavings size is better for their health and for clean up? Which of these sizes is best? I think what they have on sale is like photos 1 and 2.

This is our barn. We are turning over 1/4 of the lower barn into a chicken coop. It has a concrete floor. We are in NY and I want to be sure it has proper ventilation and insulation for the winter. Here are my current thoughts/questions: -Do we need to put insulation into the walls/ceiling or...

Where to purchase our first chicks from?

Hello, We are hoping to purchase our first chicks this spring for egg laying, and then also some meat birds. I know Country Max brings in chicks in a couple of months, but is that a good way to purchase chicks? Obviously I want healthy birds, but I'd also like chicks where Mom and Pop are well...

    New to chickens in NY

Hello! We just moved to a home with more land and plan on getting chickens in the spring for egg laying, and then also some meat birds. I've been reading, but it seems the more I read the more questions I have :) So here is our barn. We are pretty sure we are going to build a coop area...
