So we've had 2 chickens "just die" in the last 2 months (roughly a month apart). I say "just die" because they showed no outward systems of being ill and were running around with the flock, eating and drinking right before death. Both chickens were from the original 6 we bought (we have/had 15)...
So ... I built my coop in the dead of Texas Summer, and the design we chose made sense with two 2' x 2' windows on the south side and two 18" x 12" vents on the north side. Quick coop run-down. It's ~400 sqft ground area with a ~50 sqft inside floor space (excluding nesting box spaces)...
I've seen many posts in the forum on how to automatically water your chickens ... There are some pretty ingenious ideas out there using toilet bowl floats and PVC.
I had already purchased one of those Little Giant Automatic Water's months and months ago so I decided to try and make it work...
So, I don't have an infestation by any means... But I've noticed a few here and there and I hate them.
I only notice them if I'm in the coop at night for some reason (like adding some new chickens or doing some late night water/food). I've read some past posts that said using Boric Acid is...
So I live in Texas ... And Texas is finally being Texas without all the cold rainy days and we're suppose to be consistently near 100 all week.
I just picked up some new chicks today and I'm in a little bit of a conundrum ...
Keeping them in the uncooled garage in 100 degree heat is probably...
So I have 6 hens and a rooster, they've been in their new coop about a week. They will get on the roost (1 is 15 inches off the ground and ~8ft long, the other is 30 and 8ft long) but at night they tend to literally form a ball in the corner of the coop...
I'm not "too" worried about it but I...
A few months ago my wife and I decided on chickens ... we looked high and low for a good coop but the largest (but yet smallest) coops were ~$400. Certainly I could build something better ... for a modest $500-600 ?
So, thus began a 6 week project (mostly due to rain - ridiculously large...
I'm going to start my coop next weekend, but I was thinking about how 98% of the coop will be all wood ... which is going to make it a royal pain to clean (if the little roost bar I made for them in their tub is any indication).
I'm wondering what ya'll have done to make the inside of the coop...
