My hens have really slacked off on egg laying. I have noticed quite a few with pink combs rather than bright red when they are laying. Out of 14 adults...if I get 2 eggs, it's a good day....
Now waiting for my juveniles to start....probably not till Spring
I have been trying to integrate my juvenile chickens into the existing flock.
The older birds keep bullying the juveniles and won't let them out of the coop into the pen to get feed and water.
It's going on the 3rd day and it's frustrating as I have never had this issue before. Should I just...
My Guineas have a community nest in their coop and has probably 30 or more eggs. Will the girls start incubating soon or will they just continue laying ?
took one of my hens to a vet this afternoon ( my first ever )...thinking hen had bumblefoot...vet thinks it's Gout.
Never heard of chickens developing gout....
She ( Gertrude ) is a 2 y/o Lavender Orpington ...will have photos tomorrow. Feet are wrapped up and she is resting in a dog crate...
I guess the guinea eggs can be water-glassed ??
I set up 2 jars last year...opened one a few weeks ago and it smelled worse than a boiled goat's A**. I am afraid the second jar will be the same.
Not a problem with my chicken eggs, though.
Two of my rooster hAve decided to try and take over the hen's nesting boxes to the point where the girls can't get in to lay their eggs.
Why would they start doing this and how can I correct this ?
Tried a couple days ago to integrate the juveniles ( 12 weeks +/- ) with the main flock. The sections of thhe coop has ben divided with chicken wire and a screen door. Definitely a look but no touch situation.
So I opened the door so all could start being together... Our adult guineas were...
Harched these baby chicks about 4 months or so ago...Blue Plymouth Rock and Lavender Orpingtons.
The dark Blue Rock on the left is definitely a Roo as he is already crowing ( or what he thinks is crowing ),,,but nt sure about the Lavender to his right. Comb slightly larger than it's hatch...
I have a lovely Lavender Orpington ( think a Roo ) that has a spayed foot ( curls under ) . I used Q-tips and tape to make splints for his upper legs but need to know if anyne out there has some suggestions, ideas, patterns , et al for some foot splits.
It's the Muddy Season here in Missouri and with all the rain we have had, our chicken oen is a muddy, stinky MESS , What can we do to allevate the mud and the stink ? Mulch or straw ?
Like many of you in the Midwest, we here in Missouri have been subjected to snow, ice and frigid wind chills...sometimes -20 and lower.
Normally my hens are great about continuing to lay in cold weather but the 9" of snow we got along with the cold winds have resulted in a drastic reduction in...
I want to try water-glassining eggs but some of my eggs come out kinda "poopy". Since the eggs still have to have the "bloom" on them, how can I clean the eggs and still have them OK for water-glassins ?
I love my guineas,,,as ugly and noisy as they are but now thay have developed an annoying beahvior.
I have those bucket feeders with the PVC elbow that I hang onto the pen side and are supposed to be non-spill...and those blasted birds still get in there and whip feed out onto the ground with...
Got some 2 week old guinea keets from a friend last week and while they'd all been doing fine, this morning I noticed one missing. Checked the coop and one was by itself in a corner. Not peeping at all but just seems "sleepy" , I took it out and brought it into the house. Didn't even try to get...
I have 2 adult ( 1 year old ) Guineas and 4 Juvenile keets ( about 3 months old ). The Juveniles are getting pretty good sized and starting to get their "big " voices. Could I now integrate them with the adult Guineas or should they wait a wee bit longer ?
ny suggestions ???
This current group ( 2 weeks old ) will pop in and out of the coop during the day but won't troop inside at night. So, I have to scoop them up and place them through the open door ...they will stay then but haven't yet seemed to "get it" on their own.
Temps here in Mid-Missouri now in the upper 80's and 90's during the day.
I have some baby chicks about a week old....when should they be able to have access to their outside pen ?
Here some photos I took this afternoon of my 9 chicks.
Anyone want to help determine sex ? two of the chicks are about 8 weeks old and the other 7 are 4 weeks old
I have 3 guineas ( 2 male and one female ) that pretty much get along with my chickens ,,,,except they are bullying the H*** out of one of my 2 roosters...chase him inside the coop and won't let him out.
was observed approaching our chicken pen a few days ago...and while we had had clearance from the area game warden to take this predator out...I hate the idea of dispatching such a beautiful creature.
Bobcat was sent to Heaven.
Hubby...who up until then absolutely HATED my guineas...had it...
