I have an older hen that has been wheezing and coughing for over several years (don't judge, I was dealing with my parents back to back in hospice till they post passed). Other then, she is active, eats well, good body weight and no other symptoms ( had she acted ill I would have done...
These things are more like a tick then a flea I recently had the horror of this infestation with my little flock of 12 hens. Seems the older hens had the worst of it.
I am going to share what I did because I was reading about treatments and how difficult and time consuming it was to get rid of...
I have an older Americauna, She is probably getting close to 5 yrs old. She got pretty sick last year with sour crop but has been doing very good since. She starting laying again and after a few thin shelled eggs she has now started laying rubber eggs all this week.
We supplement with crushed...
I was cleaning out the nest box after a broken egg and saw a few Itty bitty crawling bugs...how do I know they are mites and not "just" a bug?
The chickens don't seem to be bothered and I checked one of my hens around her neck and comb...her skin was clean as a whistle.
I am posting a...
I have 3 chicks, 1 that is with the hen and 2 in the house. They are 6 weeks old and the hen is starting to shoo the one away from her. She doesn't call it over to share food but will peck at it. She will sleep with it in a crate at night. I have the 2 in the house that have been spending the...
I noticed she was dropping alot of her feathers around sides and legs....not how she usually molts. I have been letting her out from the nursery pen to run with the other hens during the day and yesterday I got a hold of her and noticed that she was very skinny! She is usually pretty stout! She...
I have a hen that is a little over 4 years old. Today we noticed she wasn't really interested in eating much...would take a few bites of her favorite food then mozie away. She spent time hiding in bushes today instead of our foraging. I checked her crop, lots of water (she was hanging around the...
So these 2 chicks that I have that don't seem to be all that interested in chick food...I watch them pecking and scratching...eating just enough to put a little bit the crop. I am wondering if having light on all the time (I cover cage part way at night so they can sleep but they are up and down...
I have these 2 chicks that until recently looked exactly the same...I noticed the comb on one is more prominent. Does this indicate anything at this point?POINT?
The first one is my roo suspect?
I have 2 chicks inside. 1 eats good and the other doesn't. I have wet the crumble and it picks at it but not filling crop like it should. It can have an almost empty crop and I will put down fresh food and the other chick dives in and this one seems uninterested.
She does go crazy over a...
I have 2 chicks in a brooder box with a lamp and small floor heat pad. I noticed starting today both are scratching at the sides of their heads a lot. They don't seem in pain or distressed. I took a close look at one and couldn't see anything...no mites or anything irritated looking.
I did take...
My hen has 5 chicks, I was hoping for more so I thought I would get a few chicks at the feed store.
I had read both ways...face to face intro or slip under hen late at night.
Face to face worked for 1 that looked like one of hers (blended in) the other 2 had markings like another one of hers but...
Hi, My broody hen broke a 2 week egg and it made a huge mess of the nest. Without thinking I wiped off one of the eggs with a damp paper towel and then realized I probably did more harm then good...do I just leave the eggs with the gunky stuff on them and hope for the best or is there a way to...
So I have a super good momma hen and we will be rehoming her chicks next week...what is the best way to separate her.
Ideas so far:
Bring chicks in the house the day before
Lock her out of the brood pen and leave the chicks in for a few days
Just take the chicks as new owners arrive to claim...
I am on my second broody hen and I have a 4 yr old hen who's never been broody causing problems. It started out that Java wanted to lay an egg in the broody nest which was the favored box of the 7 hens. Then advanced to when the broody hen would get off of the nest, she would run in and sit on...
I know some can tell by feathering development and some can just look at a chick and "know"...so take your best guess and give me hints at what you look at.
They all hatched ftom blue or green eggs.
I bought fertile hatching eggs, all green or blue eggs. While a few chicks look like EE some don't at all...any guesses?
Also, I have her hens sprout tail feathers sooner then roos...if so I think.I am 50/50.
Anyone know how reliable this is?
Posting pictures...hard to get them to stand still.
I know we have some that are goid at seeing by pictures...at what age can you tell on an EE or Ameracauna...and what do I need to focus the picture(s) on?
Thank you!
