Sunscreen for bald chickens? Is there one?

I’ve attached a photo of Miss Fluff. As you can see, she has whiskers, not feathers. When she molted last fall, she had worms and mites. Yes. I feel like a horrible parent. She was outside with the other chickens and I noticed her legs were badly sunburned. What sunscreen is safe for...

Chicken seems dizzy: off most food but drinks water

I have a chicken who seems dizzy. She walks slowly and often has to take a step to get her balance. She has feeling in both feet, as she pulls her feet away if I pinch her toes. I have palpated her and she doesn’t seem sore or have any knots. She has a normal crop. She won’t eat anything...

Molting hen growing whiskers not feathers

All of my chickens had a heavy molt this year. Two hens lost nearly all their feathers at the same time. One is fully feathered now. The other seems to have cat’s whiskers growing in instead of her usual feathers. It’s really cold outside and I’m not sure what to do.

Fall 2024 Molt Report - For science: correlate with the weather?

I’ve always wondered if there is a correlation between molts and weather. So, let’s gather some data. Please list: Where you live? What breeds you have? How much your birds molted this fall: Then, this spring, we can look at the molts and weather and see if there is any correlation or if it is...

Used a donor egg shell to repair broken egg

My broody hen did NOT like the new nesting box I moved her to and refused to sit on her eggs. So I moved her back to the old box. Came to old nest to get eggs and saw dog trying to eat one of the eggs. As I looked at the egg, the end was completely off and to my horror, the chick moved. The...

    This doesn’t seem like Bumblefoot

I’m at a loss as to what to do. My Rooster doesn’t like to stand and will often lay down. These are his feet. I’ve scraped down the black spots that seemed like bumbles, but under the scabs is soft tissue (not hard bumbles. Do I need to keep digging or is this something else?

Gapeworm treatment — Ivermectin on back for how many days?

I have one hen with pretty bad Gapeworm. I treated with spot on Ivermectin at 1 drop per 50 grams. She needed 36 drops because she was just under 1800 grams. (I weighed her with my handy dandy sourdough scale.) Do I just give her the Ivermectin once? Or do I need to do it every day? I read...

Notre Dame Puts Golden Rooster atop of their rebuilt Cathedral in Paris

I think we can all agree that a golden rooster atop the cathedral is a great choice! https://www.cnn.com/videos/style/2023/12/20/notre-dame-holmes-pkg-ldn-vpx.cnn

    Livestock Guardian dog eats eggs

I got Fernando -- Great Pyranees -- as a pup to guard my chickens from coyotes and vermin. He's less than a year old, and so we're working through issues. He has discovered that chickens lay eggs and eggs are delicious. He hears the egg song and joyously runs over to the nesting box, and has...

Is this a Bantam Barred Rock?

So I got some chicks the last week of October. One of them is much smaller than the rest. She is the one on the right. She seems healthy, and isn’t picked on. Could she be a bantam? Or does she look unhealthy to you?

PSA: Secure your bachelor flocks so this doesn’t happen....

Friendly reminder: it’s spring and the boys are feeling their wild oats. Make sure your bachelor coops are SECURE so you won’t be covered in blood when one of them gets out and challenges your head Roo to a duel. My boys are OK, other than some bleeding combs, but I feel really stupid for...

    Warm winter hats for Roosters

I made my roosters winter hats. Yes. I can already hear it. “They don’t need hats or heat, I live at the South Pole and my chickens live with penguins and never need heat or hats. I’m doing this for me. It makes me feel better when their heads are warm. Also. It makes me laugh. (I’m mostly...

How far from the hens does the bachelor flock need to be?

My bachelors get along well but are driving my hens crazy. They were all hatched together, and now the boys are big enough to have their own space. The one question I can’t find the answer to is how far away from my hens do my bachelors need to be? I can easily block the hens from sight. But...

How do I incorporate one single hen into an established flock?

I have 14 chickens: 8 hens and 5 Roos. One is the head Roo and the others are babies. (Yes, I know the ratio is not good.) I found one single hen on the side of the road. I know it is not ideal to try to incorporate one hen into the flock, but, I really don’t have an option. After her...

    Crop goop thick as concrete

My little 5 week old hen either has pendulous crop or she got into something that is causing her system to slow. Last night, she had a HUGE crop that was squishy like one of those gel stress balls and when I picked her up to try to massage it down, she immediately puked it up. It was dark brown...

What is the minimum distance from hens that bachelor flocks need to be?

I hatched out 8 babies and, of course, 5 were boys. But I love roosters because without hens they are wonderful little pets. So, how far away from the hens do I need to put my bachelor flock so I don’t have fighting and sneak attacks?

My old lady hen has Mareks. How do I keep my exposed chicks healthy?

My old lady hen has Mareks. I am nearly sure of it because one of her legs doesn’t work, she has skin legions, raised bumps on her skin and green diarrhea. Her eyes also don’t dilate as well. I thought sure she had sour crop. (And, I think she did, I had to massage and give her clotrimazole...

Giant red bruise under my hen’s vent

It almost looks like acid was splashed on her but it is a bruise. The skin seems intact. The bruise goes al the way down and to the side. It is about 10 cm by 10 cm. It’s not swollen either. It appears she is bleeding under her skin. I’m stumped. And I don’t know what to do! Do I clip the...
