So this might be a bit of a strange topic, but I enjoy mind games like this...
Premise:
-Pigeons can be quite low-maintenance. My father's homer-mixes have grain, water, and shelter available to them. They fly where they will and multiply like crazy, culminating in a twice-yearly squab feast...
"are quail worth it" seems to be a frequently requested topic, so I thought maybe we could all do a little quail math - post it on this thread - have it added to the sticky - and be able to refer people to it from time to time.
Sound good to anyone else?
I'll start.
This first bit I already...
My Jumbo Coturnix, hatched from UglyDucky eggs, started laying on Sunday - just a few days before their 7th week birthday.
Today, I got my 10th egg, and I just had to share!
Here they all are, packed away in one of the cartons their parents arrived in.
Here they are arranged by size, the...
My quails are still growing up a storm. I moved them to a larger, mesh-covered bin in the garage because they had begun to fly out of their brooder in the office.
Here is a size comparison of them, two days old vs two weeks old
Two days old (cue the 'aww' soundtrack):
Look at them all hiding...
My eggs pipped yesterday morning, and hatched early this morning.
3 out of 11, which is decent considering what they went through in the mail.
The rest of the eggs are still in the incubator waiting in hope.
And now (drumroll please) a picture!
Three chickies in a brooder!
So, quick...
Hi,
I'm going to ask a n00b first-timer question now!
Lockdown for my quail eggs begins tomorrow morning.
Do I turn them the final time tonight or tomorrow AM?
Do I bump up the humidity tomorrow AM or should I do it tonight?
Does this actually matter?
Thanks tons guys,
-Zay
For anyone who hand-turns eggs:
What, in your experience, is the best way to turn eggs?
Best way to prevent dropping & breaking eggs?
Best way to keep the dang things from rolling over when you just turned them to the other side?
Etc..?
My eggs arrived in the mail!
Probably not the smartest week to order them, but ah well... live and learn.
8 Jumbo Brown Coturnix and 3 Jumbo Golden Coturnix survived the violence of the postal system.
Here they are, nestled in their nice warm incubator, just brimming with potential.
As you...
I am interested in a small number (no more than 6) Squabbing King or Texan Pioneer fertile eggs as a gift to my father.
I have foster-pigeons waiting!
Do you have these birds? Willing to part with a few eggs?
How much would you charge for eggs and shipping to Utah?
-Zay
What do you think? Is there any way such fragile eggs could make it through the postal service intact and hatchable?
Also, I am aware that (unlike chickens) pigeons need parental care once they hatch.
This post is about the eggs making it through the mail.
Thanks,
-Zay
My incubator arrived! I wasn't even expecting it because the site never had tracking info - I expected they wouldn't send it until after the holidays!
I had to fix the thermometer because the mercury (or alcohol or whatever they put in them these days) had split in transit.
I had to remove the...
I bought 5 quail.
A week later I began to hear crowing, "what a cute sound" I thought.
I sexed the quail. 3 males, 1 probably male, and one hen. The occasional crowing began to be a little less cute.
Last night the quail decided that crowing once every 5 minutes was too occasional, and ramped...
Does anyone have a brinsea Mini Eco? How well does it work?
I have been reading great reviews for the mini advance and the octagon 20 eco, but none for the mini eco - is it as good as it's counterparts?
Thanks,
-Zay
EDIT:
Nevermind, I bought one anyways since nobody else seems to have one...
Hi Folks,
I was wondering if the GQF chickbator has any chance at all of hatching eggs.
Does anyone have any experience with them?
I know that with it's small size, it would be susceptible to room temperature changes, would wrapping it in a blanket help?
Thanks for your help,
-Zay
I am looking for about 5 to 10 coturnix hens for eggs.
I recently purchased 5 unsexed coturnix, however only one was a hen. This is frustrating.
I don't want so spend huge amounts of money, so shipping is probably out of the question.
I know in all likelyhood there is nobody nearby, but I...
Well, since my new flock of coturnix have been crowing for a few days, I decided to do a little flock maintenance - wing trimming and sexing.
Might as well do both at the same time!
In a flock of 5 birds, I have 3 definitely roos, 1 definitely hen, and 1 confusing bird which is probably just a...
This morning, in through my window wafted a sound I had only heard on the internet before. A quail crowing.
Such a pretty sound! I was delighted. I poked the (sleeping) scruffy fiance and whispered "I just heard a quail crowing" He replied with a noncommittal "that's nice" sound, and continued...
I have 6 quail!!! I'm so excited!
Quail # 1. dark brown with a few white specks along the beak.
Quail # 2. dark brown with a small white bib
Quail # 3. Dark reddish brown with white chin and chest spot.
Quail # 4. lighter brown, no white markings, the center of each feather is...
Being new to Quail, I have been poking through the internet in search of all the information I can get about Coturnix.
I've learned a lot in the last few weeks, but I recently found a few pages that have very conflicting information about the thickness of quail eggs.
Example 1...
I'm brand new to keeping quail.
I've found someone near where I live who is selling some Coturnix, but he doesn't seem to know much about them. He has "white" and "brown" quail, but can't tell me if they are Jumbos, A&M, Pharoh, etc. There is no telling what quality (or age) these adult quail...
