    Tapeworm treatment questions

I have been searching the existing threads but can't find an answer to my question so here goes. We have 31 hens and 2 roosters who wander freely all day on 3-4 acres. We do not have a run. The other day I noticed white specks in one of the droppings that were moving. After researching, I'm...

    Feathers look strange.

Hi! I’m noticing the feathers on most of my flock look strange. I’ve looked for mites and lice and haven’t found anything. Is this a nutritional deficiency or some other parasite? Just want to add that I do know one of my roosters has been aggressive this spring but the roosters feathers look...

Refrigerated, unwashed eggs. Power went out. Still good?

I store our unwashed eggs in a small refrigerator on our porch. Our area was without power for 48 hours and the eggs were no longer cold, just cool. Now the power is back on and the eggs are cold again. Are they still good?

    Lash egg?

Update: It’s gone! I left it there so that I could create this post, do a little lash egg research & grab gloves. When I went back to remove it, it was gone! I’m not sure which hen(s) ate it. Will they get sick now too? I just went to collect the eggs and found this in the nesting box. It looks...

    Dogwood sawfly larvae?

Our dogwood bush is being invaded by dogwood sawfly larvae. I’m going to clip the heavily covered branches. Does anyone know if it would be safe to place them in the coop for the chickens to eat?

7 month old Columbian Wyandotte-rooster or hen?

Hello! We got some chicks from the local feed store in March. All were supposed to be pullets. We got 2 Columbian Wyandottes and 1 Barred Rock. They are 7 months old now and only the Barred Rock is laying. I am outside watching them because we just moved them into the larger coop with the...

Broody hen or something else wrong?

Our 8 month old barred rock hasn’t laid an egg in 3-4 days. She started laying about 3 months ago and has consistently laid an egg every day but has never laid her eggs in the nesting box. She lays them at the top of the ramp inside the coop. There is no type of bedding or anything there...

    Rooster or hen? (Barred Rock)

We added 4 chicks to out flock 2 months ago. They are about 12 weeks old now. We got them from a local farm and they said they were pretty sure they were all pullets. I've been noticing that the tail of one of the barred rocks sticks straight up and the other doesn't. The comb is also...

It happened so fast! Has anyone every had this happen before? She is bleeding but not too badly. She seems okay other than the beak. I am worried that she won't be able to eat. Will it grow back?

Advice on adding to flock/mixing breeds

We currently only have 2 RIRs that are about a year old. We are going to get 4 chicks this spring and I'm looking for advice on getting different breeds. We live in northern Illinois so we need cold weather breeds. We are looking at Black Australorps, Dominiques, Silver Laced Wyandottes and...

Ideas for adding ventilation to our truck cap coop?

We live in northern Illinois and we're getting into some extremely cold weather. This is our first winter with chickens. We were given a small store-bought coop that our chickens were in all summer while we built a coop out of an old work truck cap. We completed it and moved the girls in...

High of -8 in a few days. Move food & water inside the coop?

This is our first winter with chickens. We got them in the spring and have always kept the food and water in their run. We're in northern Illinois and the tempuratures are going to be in the single digits and even down to -8 on Sunday. Today it was in the upper teens and is now 10 degrees...
