I came home this evening to a bloody egg and found a hen with a very bloody vent. She is about 7 months old and has been laying an egg per day since May/June. I soaked her in warm water and cleaned her up. I have moved her into our basement, which stays pretty dark. Is there anything else I can do?
I am currently away on vacation and the boy that is taking care of my girls sent me the attached photo of the eggs he collected today. One of my EEs apparently laid this large, long egg today. She's young, about 6 months old. She's never laid an egg like this before. Should I be concerned? Is...
Hi all,
We were out in the yard with our 3yr old and chickens tonight. We live in town. Our back yard is completely enclosed with an 8ft privacy fence. Our 70ish yr old neighbor came out and "voiced an opinion" about several things. Her back door overlooks our backyard.

My husband and I are going to be building a coop for our flock very soon. We will have 7 Silkies (1 is a roo), 5 Easter Eggers, and 1 Australorp. We are trying to decide what materials would be best to build our coop. We are in southern Indiana and our winters can get into negative temperatures...
I got these chicks from the "Miscellaneous Pullet" tank at Rural King. I was told they are Araucana, but I have my doubts. I know the little black one is an Australorp. I am thinking maybe Welsummers and maybe Easter Eggers? One has a much darker, chocolate colored head than any of the others. I...
Hi all! I'm Jessica. I live in Southern Indiana with my husband and daughter. I work in administration at our local hospital. We live in town, but I grew up on a small farm and have always had chickens. Last year, I got my own chickens for the first time. We chose Silkies for their small size...
