Can Marek's show up after years?

I have a large mixed flock of 20+ birds. They range in age from 8 years to 8 weeks. Earlier this week, I found my beloved silkie rooster (been here 2 years with no problems) half dead from an unknown cause. He had wounds on his head and back, which appeared to be from the other chickens, but...

    Pullet?

I'm hoping everyone agrees this is a pullet. It's a barnyard mix out of my white silkie roo and judging by her coloring, a barnevelder hen. These babies hatched around May 1st. I'll also include a picture of the buff/silkie mix that I'm 100% sure is a roo for comparison.

Hen done raising chicks - now what?

I have a speckled Sussex that hatched out 11 chicks starting May 2nd. She is not a very nice hen (she will peck if she thinks you have food), but she's approachable so I thought maybe it would work out since she would teach the babies not to be afraid. Well, the babies aren't afraid but she has...

    Both pullets?

I got these chickens from a friend. They hatched around January 25th. I believe one is a starlight green egger and one is a prairie bluebell egger. The brown one has me a bit worried, because the neck feathers look a little pointy in person, and she (?) has recently become very bold.

    Hoover's Hatchery assortments - breeds?

I'm looking for breed ideas for the brown and gray pullets (hopefully!) a friend gave me. I think they're probably a Prairie bluebell and a Starlight green egger. She got rare and colored layer assortments. Any ideas other than what I already assumed?

Chicken won't put weight on one leg

I have a 5.5 year old buff orpington that came out of the coop today unable to walk on one of her legs. It's not red or swollen. It is a bit warm but I think that's from holding it against her body. She drank some water but isn't eating. She's a bit puffed up but otherwise doesn't seem stressed...

    Wing feathers hanging down?

We unfortunately had a bear break into our coop over the weekend. It took off with an adult hen and a 12 week old pullet. Everyone else seems fine, except my favorite pullet Nellie. She's still eating, drinking, running around, begging for snuggles and in general just being the best chicken...

    Black bear attack

Well, it seems like a black bear got into my coop last night and took off with 2 chickens. I don't think anything else could rip a nest box door off the hinges, and there was black fur everywhere. I have an electric net/charger that I've never set up. It's pouring rain right now. I'm terrified...

    All pullets?

8 weeks old, from Meyer hatchery, with the exception of the bearded EE/marans mix. She's maybe a week or two older. I do know one of the lavender orps is a boy. I'm not sure what order these will upload in, but there's an olive egger, the EE/marans mix, a black Orpington and a barnevelder. I'm...

    Sick hen and traveling

I just found my 2 year old speckled sussex hen lethargic in the coop. I picked her up and immediately noticed her crop was huge and squishy, and it felt like a water balloon. I took her to the porch while I did some googling and figured it's probably sour crop. I held her on my lap for about 30...

    Is this a cream legbar?

This chick is 4 weeks old. Should be a cream legbar, and her coloring is similar, but she doesn't have any sign of a crest and she is several shades lighter than the others. She also doesn't look anything like the welsummers in the same order. You can see another chick in some of these that has...

    bBs Orpington - cockerel

This is my Meyer Meal maker chick. The options for the week I ordered were BbS Orpington or olive egger. I don't think this one's an olive egger but I could be wrong. My worry is that it's a cockerel. It's feathering very slowly compared to everyone else (even the other cockerels I'm sure of)...

Any idea on breed for this Meyer Meal Maker?

3 weeks old today. She (hopefully) is not at all friendly or approachable. No tail feathers at all. Their website says the meal maker for that would could be a BBS Orpington or an Olive Egger. I have another Olive Egger and she has a much more developed tail and is much more friendly, but being...

    Is this welsummer a cockerel?

I am "raising" 4 welsummer and 4 cream legbar "females" for a friend, along with my various chicks. Ordered from Meyer hatchery. They are 3 weeks old today and I wouldn't be suspicious if I didn't have 3 others to compare it to. This welsummer has very different colored feathers from the other...

    Should I get a rooster?

We are moving in a month from a residential neighborhood to 14 mostly wooded acres in the country. I already have poultry netting but I don't use a charger as I have never needed it. I am planning to use a charger once we move. I would love to keep my ladies as safe as possible and of course...

Buying a house with a coop - disinfecting?

We're buying a house that has a nice coop and the people have chickens in it currently. What's the best way to clean this so that my ladies aren't exposed to possible sicknesses the other flock may have had? I am not sure on my older hens, but my 3 youngest did receive the Marek's vaccine. Will...

    Egg bound! What now?

I was just sitting with my chickens when I noticed one hen acting weird. Staying away from the others, puffed up, not eating grass like usual, with some liquid leaking from her vent. Every once in a while she was squatting. Of course a quick Google search says she's egg bound. She's not easily...

    Landscaping around coop/run?

Hi all, This spring I am planning on planting around my chicken coop. I'm hoping it will make it look better and provide greenery for the chickens to eat. Has anyone planted landscaping around their coops? Can you tell me what you planted, and maybe show some pictures for ideas? I've attached a...

Is this concerning? Missing feathers on face.

I have 4 chickens in my flock currently. Because of the time change, lately they have not been out of their coop/run during the week. They seem very unhappy in there, so this weekend we are adding a 10x10 dog kennel run to give them more space. Tonight while feeding them and visiting, I noticed...

    What would you use?

Hi everyone, I am new this year to chickens. I have a small flock of 2 buff orpingtons, 1 australorp and 1 "easter Egger" (who lays brown eggs.) We purchased a prefab coop with attached run from TSC and while I like it, I feel that my birds need more space, like most chicken owners I would...
