We were unexpectedly awarded chicks by one of our broody hens on Thanksgiving. They are now 5 weeks old. We weren't setup to brood chicks so we quickly went to lowes and got a 75 gallon container and heat lamp.
They are now quite crowded in the container. Only problem is temps outside are highs...
I have no real issues at the moment. Just curious what the average chicken owners keeps stock of.
So what you keep stocked in your chicken medicine cabinet?
Ours:
Bandages
Gauze
Neosporin
Wormer
Permethrin
Vetrx
Bluekote
Electrolytes
I maybe missing a few items.
Noticed the last couple days she's been breathing hard and had kinda a dry cough.
Then noticed this. One foot seems to be twice as big as the other and the toe is curled sometimes. She just started a limp as well.
We have a couple these from my work we put in the run for nesting boxes but this one is huge and I have to haul it 11hrs back home. Lol. The things I do. The chickens love laying eggs in them. But told the wife I got to cut a hole big enough for her to reach the eggs in this one.
So I got a wasp nest above the door where I've drilled holes for ventilation and covered with hardware cloth. So the nest is behind that in the wall. They attack everytime we go in the door. So my dilemma is how to get rid of it. I've covered the hardware cloth with mesh so they can't fit...
Last week we added 4 more to our flock of 8. Excited to have them. 1 white orpinton, 1 chocolate orpington, 1 crested legbar and 1 blue maran. My question is does the blue maran look cockrel or hen to you? We were told they are 4.5 months old.
We've noticed one of our hens started hopping like a bunny when she runs. Just thought it was cute. But today I noticed a gash on her back so I'm assuming it's from our roosters spurs as he's typically more rough with her when mating.
What should we put on it and I'm guessing we need to...
Last year we planted a vegetable garden in our backyard and nothing grew very well. This year I decided to do a home soil test. Results were low on nitrogen, potash and phosphorus.
Over the past year we saved the chickens straw from their coop and dumped it in a corner of their run so theyve...
Last night my wife locked the girls in with one still in the nest box laying which is in the coop. This morning she went to go let them out and the one that was in the nest box was dead just out side of the box. Her side and stoMach eaten. Just a few feathers scathered about. None of the other...
Poor old girl having a tough time breathing. Any suggestions? Not sure how old she is. We've had her since April and she always kinda breathed weird but now she seems to be gasping alot. But she is behaving normal. Not lethargic. This is her. She opens her mouth and gasps a deep dry breath...
Anyone care to take a guess at breed. Got him from a bad situation. Was told brown legbar. Not sure bout that. Seems to be around 2. But he's been really good today. The girls really took well to him since they lost the last guy to possibly mareks or heat stroke.
Been 110 heat index for the last week. Doing what we can with a fan, ice water, electrolytes and shade. Still think our 10 month old rooster suffered a heat stroke. He's been lethargic, isn't too interested in the hens and seems to lose his balance alot. He still eats and drinks. But during free...
