It's a long stoy
It's a long story but I have too many chickens for my little run. They are 6 months old and all hens. Will people buy them, and if so at what price? Should I just give them away because people won't buy them? Please chime in.
When my dad and I had chickens we just used standard chicken wire for the run which is very hard to work with and seems to rust away to dust in a relatively short time. I'm thinking of rebuilding the run that was attached to a solidly built coop that could hold 70 chickens, if I can rodent...
My dad always fed the chickens oyster shells and he just left them out in a special container and they seemed to know they should eat it. Is that all I need to do with grit?
This year is the first time I have attempted to raise a flock made up entirely of Polish chickens. I have several chickens that looked exactly alike. It is amazing, but they are absolutely identical. The chickens are straight run so surely I have some roosters. The problem is that, unlike...
This is the first year I have attempted to raise a flock made up of Polish chickens They are about 6 months old and are quite different in their activities than standard chickens. My problem is that many of them look exactly alike and they are straight run. Clearly I must some roosters...
I have to insulate a portion of my chicken run. I have checked all over the internet and apparently I am the only person on earth who has ever had to do this. My problem is that I basically know what to do, but I don't know what kind of insulation would be safe for the chickens if they got to...
Is grain scratch good for the chickens or is it just a marketing idea from the animal industry. I have always give the chickens cracked corn but the scratch looks more nutritious to me.
It has been my experience that when I have purchased chicks from the local feed store, or a large hatchery that does mail order, I can expect a few of the chickens to die in the first 48 hours. I put 10 chicks in the brooder and 8 ran around eating and drinking as healthy as can be. The other...
I had a coop built on the ground and had no problems for many years. All of a sudden 2 years ago we had a rat infestation and had to give away the flock before the rats destroyed them. Now, after 2 years, I am ready to raise chicks again. I have purchased an above ground coop with a large...
After a 2 year hiatus I am going to raise chickens again. I love exotic chicks and I have decided to go with an entirely "Polish/Crested" flock. Just a small groups to start, 8-10 chickens. Is there anything special I should know about raising these breed as opposed to any other standard breed?
My coop is built just like a house, dad was a contractor, but the floor is dirt. Recently I have lost a few of the smaller chickens during the night. There have been some small holes in the floor, which I fix right away, but they don't seem large enough to pull a chicken through them. Also...
Am I reading the rules correctly? Since I'm new I can't post that I'm looking for a particular type of chicken? I'm not sure if I understood that item correctly.
This event is what drove me to find and online community. There was a whole in the chicken pen fencing that I didn't know about. I let the chicks out in the morning and locked them up at night and made check-ups on the birds and the coop etc on a regular basis. I wish I had seen the hole...
Hi everyone, I'm hoping you just the group I need. You see, my father always had all the answers, but he passed on 7 months ago and the questions have piled up. A mojor crisis with my flock over the past few day finally got me in gear to seek out some like minded people/ My immediate issue...
