    Broken Rooster....

3 weeks ago I woke to what sounded like the scream of a chicken being murdered. Well, sure enough, Mr Raccoon was in the process of reaching thru the wire and was trying to pull a roosting roo out of the pen. Roo survived, as did coon. Pen secured with smaller mesh. Now, the victim roo has not...

    Bouncing Baby Bantam Id Game

Made the mistake of stopping by the local fed store, and came home with 10 Bantys, of 6 different flavors. They told me they are about 4 weeks, and came from Ideal. All are clean legged except the frizzle thing. Ideas on to what they are?

Long story short. Got a call from a friend yesterday, asking if I wanted 7 chickens. He has a rental who had a tenant up and leave without telling him, leaving behind these birds. Said she has been doing this for 40+ years! Anybody else cook for their birds? About the most I have ever done...

Has anybody fed Firethorn berries to their chickens? Song birds eat them with gusto, and people can, so I figure chickens can. My new property has many Pyracantha/Firethorn bushes that produce huge numbers of seeds. Figure free chicken food. Experiences?

    Scorpions...

My new homestead will be in in area where 5-6 different types of scorpions are found. One variety being potentially deadly. Has anyone had problems with poultry being stung, or eating scorps? Scorpions are typically nocturnal, but with birds scratching around, you never know what they may find...

    Pine Needle Bedding?

Cant seem to find an answer to this; Can pine needles be used as bedding in a coop/pen? See folks mainly use shavings and straw. Pros? Cons? Only thing I see which may be an issue is sap. Moving to property full of Pines, and figured I might be on to something free and effective! Don

Might be an odd question, but will higher elevations affect any breeds? I assume no, but... Reason I ask is that I will be moving to property at 5600' this Spring, and was curious. Thanks in advance, Don

    Howdy from the Third coast!

Well, I've lurked long enough! Been reading, and reading, and then read some more for a few months now. Came up with several questions I couldnt find answers to, so figured it was time to join the flock! I used to raise chickens for umm........ snake food, years ago. (I bred large pythons and...
