We are attempting to hatch birds from our first flock. We have a rir rooster. Delaware hens, barred rock, rir & New Hampshire hens.
We understand all of these will create a red or black sex link with the rir rooster and rir hen will obviously be a rir. However what happens then when we breed...
Help our chickens appear to have a severe disease. The rooster is the worse. Comb is all messed up and almost looks like legions on the comb and face. Any help is appreciated. Also appears a bunch of tail feathers are gone on rooster. How do we treat?
Never had sick chickens before. we have 12 in our coop & run. Plenty of space, but tons of rain up here in PA. Chickens are about 21 weeks old and are coughing. Rooster hasn't crow'd correctly in 2-3 weeks and is now almost non existent. a few of the chickens seem to wheez a bit. I can't...
So we are trying to hatch our 1st batch from the chickens in our coop. We aren’t sure what kind of hens we have and what we will get from the hatch. We definitely have a Nice Rhode Island Red Rooster, but what are our hens? And what will we get when bred with our rooster?
I think I made a rookie mistake. I purchased a little giant 11300 incubator with fan and egg turner. I filled the water tray at bottom and added a hygrometer thermometer inside on top of the egg turner to measure temp and humidity.
Should I have added Water right away? And should I have...
I have a nice Rhode Island Red Rooster, but a limited flock size (12-15). Looking to breed for sex links red or black. What hens do you recommend I get to breed these sex links?
Delaware
Barred Rock
new Hampshire
Leghorn
white plymouth rock
other suggestions???
just wondering what people...
I have a quaker style coop with 3 perches. Its 5' x 8' with 12 chickens in it. yes it is a little crowded but they are fine. THe only issue is at night where they roost is to close to the wall the crap on the 2x4 studs on the wall. I want to move it away but i'm very limited in space.
i'm...
I realize I have our coop maxed with birds but they keep pooping on the back 2x’s and I’m tired of scraping it off of there. Any thoughts how to redesign the roosts? Do they need to be that high? Can I lower it and pull away from the wall more?
while adding feed i could hear 1 of my RIR's breathing quite heavily or a slight rasp. It was for a consistent 5 mintues every breath. You could also really see her breathing in and out versus the other birds. Is she sick? what could it be and what do I give them to solve this?
does anyone use nest pads instead of shavings or straw in the nest boxes? I have nest pads where I work and just figured I could use them instead of shavings?
Also in my quaker style coop I have 8 nest boxes for 11 birds. If I remove 3 dividers to give more room in the coop will they...
Ihave a 5x8 quaker style coop. I think i'm going to put Sweet PDZ on the entire floor instead of shavings. Do I need to mix in DE as well?
what material should I then use in the nest boxes? nest pads? shavings or sweet pdz?
my 5x8 quaker style coop has 8 nest boxes. we have 11 hens...
I have a 5x8 quaker style coop with 2 windows in front & a large vent in back. Only the top 1/2 of the windows open.
- in the winter do I want to keep both of my windows open all the time?
We currently have 11 birds.
1 RIR rooster
5 RIR hen
2 barred rock
3 Easter eggers
Only 1 maybe 2 RIR are laying. All the Easter eggers lay. I don't think any of the barred rock are laying. I understand everyone says lack of daylight but this has been going on for 2-3 months since we got them...
I'm beginning to prep for my 1st winter with chickens. What heated waterer do you guys use? Can I just put a heating element into my plastic waterer and let it go from there?
I posted a pic of my outdoor & indoor waterer. Can I use these or probably need something else?
I just ran the...
We have RIR that we're laying but now nothing since we brought them home. They are definitely eating and drinking well. Should I try artificial light? We are in PA. Pen & coop size should be fine. Any suggestions at all are appreciated
I hope this isn't a dumb question but I see the rule of thumb is 4 sq ft per bird in the coop and 10 sq ft per bird in the pen.
My coop is a 5 x 8 so that means about 10 birds but my run is large enough for 56 birds. I have 8 nesting boxes in the coop. How many birds does this mean I can have...
I have 1 - 15 lb feeder & 1 - 4 gallon waterer in the coop with a 3 lb container for oyster shells. I don't currently have anything in the run. Did I do it all backwards? I was concerned of rain water getting in the lip of the feeder and making the feed wet. should I move it all out of the...
So I am new to this, but we are excited to get this backyard chicken pen going. Some issues came about early on. We just go them 2 weeks ago, but getting very very few eggs 2-3 a day.
