Found her standing and walking slowly with one eye open at a time. Swooped her up and brought her in the house. She’s 3lbs. Gave her 1ml of rooster booster. 3mls of water. She got down 2 teaspoons of scrambled egg. I understand how not to aspirate her when giving fluids. She’s swallowing but...
I have no room for this cockerel.
The last one, I did by myself but I couldn’t get his neck stretched out long enough for a quick chop with my hatchet. It was very upsetting.
Anyone know a trick for a quick death using a hatchet? Without it requiring 2 people?
Or some other method?
Chick arrived today from Cackle.
Checked her for pasty butt. Tried to clean her up but not everything came off. Got called away.
Checked again and this REALLY looks bad.
Prolapse?
The pointy pink part is quite hard and dried up. As is the mass at the base.
I fear it is past the point of any...
Earlier this afternoon I checked everybody for pasty butts. One of the Splash Ameracaunas had one. I cleaned up with warm wet paper towels. Felt kinda hard after. Thought maybe yolk hadn’t absorbed and had to run back outside to deal with construction guys.
I just looked at her again. I could...
I just bought a 4 pack of thermometers online as I’ve suspicions my incubator thermometer is inaccurate and I read here it’s good to have a back up. When I opened the package today all 4 of them had different temps. Gah!😖
I need a good reliable thermometer. Anybody have recommendations?
Please...
Rooster is a Blue Ameracauna. Hatched out blue eggs that could have been an EE, Blue Ameracauna, Cream Legbar. There are 4 total.
The eggs were placed under broody bantams.
I’m wondering which breeds best survive airborne predators? In terms of awareness, canniness, running speed, agility, and foraging skills. Live in the Southwest. Chickens are for eggs. Chicken will free range during the day and be in a coop at night. Given bag feed. Ample places to hide.
Someone...
I have been collecting and storing my chicken manure all year in plastic garbage cans. I thought I could just turn it into my soil for growing vegetables. But is this okay?
What’s the best way to store it? I scrape it off my poop boards. So it’s straight poop.
Second question. Last year, I made...
What is the best type of camera to catch the egg eater in the act? Inside the coop where it is a bit on the dark side. I am at work away from home for many hours at a time.
Thank you.
What is this? A blood clot? How does this happen? I sell my eggs and I don’t think my customers are gonna be happy? What can I do to prevent this from happening?
My rooster has a red preen gland. Bright red skin going up his back and below his vent. He is in pain. His feathers are all dry an frizzy looking in the areas where his skin is red and they are breaking off 😳! There is no evidence of mites. I tried some triple antibiotic ointment with no...
My Roosters preen gland is red and irritated looking. There are tiny black dots around it. Not sure if they could be mites or just dirt. The skin around his vent is red. About an inch below his vent, the skin is BRIGHT red. He has some pieces of dried poop around the vent.
Can anybody tell me...
I am a new flock keeper. I have spent hours reading here. Especially about cockerels and roosters. This is a precious place. I have learned everything I've needed so far here. I appreciate and pay most attention to folks that have been here a long time.
I
I got my chicks back towards the...
My 3 New Hampshire Red cockerels have legs that have changed from yellow to red. They are 5 months old. Is this normal? I should add that their brother in a separate coop still has yellow legs.
Our cockerels have mild frostbite. I feel terrible.
This is the first coop and run we've built.
When we did, we didn't consider the cold New Mexico winters or DRAFTS. We messed up. The roosts above the poop boards are in front of a big opening covered in hardware cloth😳. I stapled some...
