Hello! We purchased 4 “Americana”, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Salmon Faverolle, and 2 Andalusian. I think, maybe, one of my birds is a mix up. I’m not mad, just curious. What is Buffy? She definitely does not look like any of the other 7 Americanas we have have. I have included a picture of the breed...
We free range during the day. There have been a few incidents with predators in which I have found that my Easter Eggers have proven to be the most aware, and the fastest. My question is does anyone have other favorite breeds that are sharp, quick, and on point while out in the yard?
Hello, BYC friends. :frowI’m hoping this is the correct forum for this question. I have some questions regarding the choice I made recently to purchase fertilized eggs and have them shipped to place under my broody Olive Egger. She went broody for about 3 days before I ordered the eggs days ago...
I recently purchased some Ayam Cemani mix fertilized eggs. I know ACs are not known to be great layers. I was wondering if the fact that they will be mixed would increase the rate of eggs laid. The rooster is an AC the hens are BJG, EE, GLW, and Astralorps. Thoughts from the experts? TIA
Oh, man. You guys. I am suspicious. We may have a Roo on our hands. I’ve never had, or even seen, a rooster with this kind of comb and I’m unsure. The look of those neck and tail feathers, the way she (?) stands and walks...all make me think boy. Thoughts?
We got our very first flock last year in March. We had 7 hens who all grew up together. We let the first broody hatch eggs that resulted in two new birds. One hen, one roo. In recent months we lost 3 hens so pecking order changed. Gladys, my remaining BJG, is definitely on the outside now. Maybe...
My year old Black Jersey Giant hen was attacked (I believe by a hawk) and has a piece of skin hanging. My main question is will that be ok to leave? She was hit on the back of her neck/top of her head right behind her comb. For lack of a better description it looks like she got her wig split...
Well, it finally happened. One of my little chickpeas became a hen today! So we are officially embarking on the next stage of chickening. They are all about 18 weeks but I suspect it was one of my Isa Browns. Yesterday I put up some new curtains made of an old sheet. I put up some nesting box...
I have a 17 week old BJG who started making an odd almost hiccup or sneeze like squawk. She seems ok other wise. It’s every so often today I noticed her making a kinda high pitch, short little squawk. Her tail is a little down. They free range everyday from about noon until 7:30 pm. I just this...
The Millie/Jerry Saga continues. Why are these two BJG developing so differently?
I have been on here asking a few times as they have grown and always the consensus is both are pullets. I had put away my questions until this week.
The one that I have been questioning has so much more red and...
We are being offered another chicken coop for a great price. How can we say no?
:idunno
My questions are about your opinions on combining two combination coops. We already have one of those combo coops that are like sheds with a built in secure run. The one we are being offered is basically a...
I woke up to that awful sound, that terrible fox bark/scream. I threw open the windows and started yelling, “Get the  out of here you stupid fox!”
I am sure the neighbors loved that. I know we have foxes, that’s not new but to hear them out there and know my girls were out there...that was...
I had my ladies out for a real deal (supervised) free range session today. They are getting so big, SO fast! I just adore them.
Here is my beautiful bearded lady. Sold to us as an “Americana”. I think she is vying for the spot of head chicken!
They enjoyed the shade of the cherry trees...
Ok, it’s happened. The heat has hit Virginia. Just a few days after our super late last frost:rant...but that’s beside the point.
It’s hot and I saw my chickens panting yesterday. I know this is a normal thing and have been sifting through the threads regarding hot chickens.
Anyone who feels...
When should I offer my girls nesting boxes? I have them blocked off for now until they learn to sleep on the roosts and not on the floor of the coop. Is that right? I don’t want to put them in too early but don’t want to be too late either! They are 8 weeks old now.
Hi all,
I have been searching & stalking the threads just to read all I can about Black Jersey Giants. I am intrigued by them!
We have 2 7 week old BJG pullets who are so sweet and funny, along with 2 ISA, and 3 EE.
I was just hoping anyone who has or has had BJGs can just share their...
Ok, friends, talk me through this. Are my chickens just tired/lazy from a full day yesterday or should I be concerned? They had a very full day yesterday including their first free range field trip, and learning about the awful terrible lawn mower. They had a good day and were all happy at the...
