1 year old broody barred rock- Massachusetts/Southern NH/Maine

Anyone looking for a broody? 1 year old barred rock hen. Had been a great layer, but is stuck in a broody cycle I can’t break. Anyone looking to hatch chicks, but no one will set a nest? Do it nature’s way! I don’t want to give her fertilized eggs as I hand raised 12 this year before she went...

6 week chick, one lame leg. How to splint?

hi all, I’ve been searching for help with this for about 2 weeks. I thought one of my silkies had splayed legs and treated for that about 2 weeks ago. She’s not feathering out as well as her hatch mates and is about 1/2 their size. When she was in hobbles she hopped along okay. I took the...

Crop question- impacted, sour crop or something else entirely?

Hi everyone- I have a hen (barred rock, almost a year old) who constantly has a puffy crop. I don’t know if it is just her anatomy, but it’s much larger than my other barred rocks who are from the same hatch. I noticed it first last fall, checked to see if it was firm (nope, felt soft and...

    Chickens stressed/sad after fox attack?

I’m 3 days post fox attack that claimed 3 of my girls and my 2nd in command cockerel. (Sorry guys, mom failed you. They were free-ranging and I ran out in the middle of the day for 20 min. Tough lesson to learn, I won’t be doing that again). The 7 I have left are eating and drinking mostly...

    16 weeks, what am I?

Hi there! I have 5 16 week birds, marked RI red pullets from tractor supply. One has started laying, I know who she is: Weirdly, no tail feathers but fluffernutter is a girl. By contrast, the other 4 all look a bit different in coloring and maturation. Different sized combs and waddles...

    Pullets sleeping in nest boxes

How do I curb this? They moved into their coop this week, and every evening I go move them once or twice out of the nest boxes onto the roosting bars. Is there a better way to stop this? I don’t have shavings in the boxes yet because the birds are only about 10-12 weeks old.

    Breed and Gender help!

Hello! I’m on my way with my first foray into chickens (and in love with them). We got our chicks from Tractor Supply. It seems like our 5 buff colored chicks might have been mislabeled, so I’m hoping for help in ID-ing breed and gender? Attached are some photos- sorry for so many, but I...

    Oddball from tractor supply

Hi all, We got 8 chicks from tractor supply about 10 weeks ago. We know we got 3 barred rocks. We also got 5 from another “pullet layer pen” that we thought were buff Orpington, but I’m not so sure now. Out of those 5, 1 is still more fluff than feathers. I’m wondering if she (fingers...

Moving chicks to garage while waiting on coop?

Hi All, I am new to this, but we've decided it's time to move our chicks out of the house (between the smell, the dust and the lack of space it's beyond time). My question is will it be ok for them to be in the garage for a week or so while we get the coop built? We have it framed, but not...

    Newbie in Massachusetts here!

Hi All, This site has been a wealth of information as I have been googling and setting up my brooder, questioning everything my chicks do and for general "is this normal" questions. I'm about 2 weeks into raising chicks and decided to join. Thank you all for the wonderful information...
