4 months old. Been very noisy lately (not a very pleasant sound she keeps making. Like some sort of upset/annoyed sound...). Pullet? (We did clip some fly feathers)
5 four-week-old lavender Orpington chicks - one I know for sure is a roo. But how about the other 4? Don’t really believe I am this lucky to get 4 pullets and 1 cockerel...
Will attach a pic of the roo in the comment section below shortly.
Hello everyone, we rescued this blind/partially blind bird about two months ago. She’s supposed to be around 8 months old now (but who knows). We were told Jersey Giant cross hen.
Please let me know 1) it’s a she! (A bit of doubt now a few random people commented on her being a roo) 2) guesses...
We’ve had ISA browns, Light Brahmas, EEs, and even two Sussex’s - they all stop laying in the winter if not supplementary lights were added.
Research tells me that Australorps are fantastic winter layers (lay a record of 364 eggs in 365 etc.) - but DO I HAVE TO ADD LIGHT for winter laying to...
Two chickens here (we picked up today - currently in quarantine. We aren’t sure if we have two pullets OR one of each gender.
BLUE - cockerel??
PINK - pullet?
5 month old. Born in June.
Also, any guesses on breed?
PINK - looks like an EE?
BLUE - ??
Pic one and two - bird 1 (6 month old)
Pic three - bird 2 (6 month old)
We were told Wyandotte’s but pretty sure they aren’t. It’s ok. Just want to make sure they’re actually hens.
If you’d like to guess for breeds, please do let me know! Thanks
Hi everyone, new to the chicken forum - we recently picked up two Light Sussex's and two Light Brahma's. We want to keep only two for the winter (gets down to -25 C).
Research tells me that these two breeds seem to be quite similar, but our brahma's are more shy & the sussex's are kinda bossy...
I've read a few threads and researched but the info seem to be conflicted...so asking if you have experience with:
- Housing Coturnix and Buttons together
- Housing Buttons outside (drops down to -20C or -4F in Winter)
Can you please share your experience? Thanks!
So we’ve been raising quail for years and this is a first. There’s about 45 four week old chicks in a grow out pen in the garage. They ALL look like this.
What’s happenin?? Molting?? Don’t think it’s overcrowded has we have been making it work for years.
No feather loss on the breast. Hoping...
Every spring/summer we get at least one hen gone broody. We usually try marking about 6 eggs to start with for her to sit on. However, they always all end up broke by day 10 or so.
Just thought I’d share it here to see if people have experience like this and whether they’ve done it...
Had a guy came to pick up hatching eggs tonight, supposed to be here by 8 pm but showed up at 9:30. Upon arrival he took out his iPhone, turned on the flashlight and said “mind if I check the eggs?” Confused, but I didn’t mind so I said “sure go ahead!”
Guy then shined the flashlight on the...
Hi folks, hope everyone’s staying healthy!
This morning I went out to the hutch, located at the end of our yard by the fence, and found 2 dead quail.
One was stuck on the side of the back wall (the only side built with wooden penals instead of hardware cloth), head removed. And the other one...
Hi all, we took a quail-break this winter and now ready to be back!
We have ordered some hatching eggs that takes 3 days to be shipped here by air.
Right now the temp is +/- minus 15C ish (about 5 degree F).
Question: should I rest the egg for a day before we put them in the incubators?
I've...
Hi everyone! We got 3 quail hens gone broody the past week, right after we culled all but 1 roos (accidentally left behind ) so the eggs should all still be fertile.
First we noticed just one sitting on about 5 eggs, then there were 3 in total that had gone broody. They are all roughly 2...
Hi, we have been hatching quail eggs for about 2 years now. In our past two hatches we found that there were MANY (30 out of 100 ish) chicks that die at the very last stages before hatching. We got 2 pipped and zipped but died before hatch, and about 28 that did not pip but seemed fully ready to...

Hi everyone, I’ve noticed that the center of my incubator is 97.3 degree while the corners and the sides of the turner is at 101.8. And this is when I set the temp of the incubator to 102.5. I try to “balance” the difference.
What would you recommend that I do? Will 101.8 be too high and/or...
Hi everyone, long story short, somebody dropped off about two dozen coturnix quail to our homestead, and they are in really BAD shape (picture below). Most of them have no feather at all on their back! I am not sure what to do. Are they able to recover? Some of them are still eating and...
Hi everyone, we live in a cold climate (central Canada, in the prairies) and it is still -10C (-14F) or so this week, and is warming up to 0C (30 ish F) next week. We are preparing to hatch our first batch of spring 2019 chicks in two weeks.
When do you start collecting eggs for hatching? Do...
