    Meyer hatchery - never again

I am SO upset. Ordered 16 chicks (and a meal maker) from Meyer hatchery in Ohio and they arrived 8 days ago. Within 48 hours, 4 chicks died. Then another 1 died two days later, and another 1 two days after that. Last night 3 died, this morning 2 more. Some have trouble breathing, some have...

Am I doing something wrong? Hatchery chicks are dying :(

I chatted with the hatchery in the morning, but until now I keep getting new questions. Last week I got a batch of chicks delivered. They have been in their shipping box from Monday afternoon until Thursday morning. After I got them out of the box, I immediately dipped their beaks in water with...

Help! Chicks arriving soon, but so is a cold front

I need advise. I am having chicks arriving, hopefully, today. They were shipped on Monday afternoon, so they have been in a box for almost three days already. Side note: USPS can't tell me where they are, tracking info is not updated and when I call they don;t know other than the info I can see...

Need ideas on roost and ventilation

I set up this roost from an old ladder, but I don;t like the "poop tarp". It smells bad :hmm. Ideally I would like to have the ladder horizontal, so I can build a poop board underneath. What would be an easy way to do this since the ladder is solid wood and heavy. A neighbor gave us this...

    RIR or Welsummer pullets

OK, another one :) I have three of these pullets. They were sold to me as RIR. They are about 12-13 weeks old. When I google RIR pullets, they should be more red. They look more like Welsummer to me, but what do you all think? BTW Pictures are taken over the past months. The last one is how...

    Rooster or pullet

OK, I need experts opinions :) These chicks are all about 2 months old. I am wondering if one of them is a rooster. The comb is larger and more red. And the tail feathers are longer. It is the chick with the white feathers and blue legs.

    Before and after....

Last week I posted about my coop. I worked all weekend to make a large brooder for the chicks. This is the result. I have a picture from before and after. I build the roosts above the brooder. And recycled the old roosts and made a ladder with it. Maybe I want to add sand under the roosts for...

    Is this normal feathering?

I have six adult chickens who all have this different feathering on the end of their backs. Is this normal? I can;t see any parasites. They are eating, drinking and laying. And look overall healthy. I googled this, but wasn't able to find an answer. TIA

Is this a good coop design?

I am new to chickens. This coop was already at the property. When I google chicken coops, most of them are much more enclosed than mine. I am in Central Texas, so we don;t get real winters. But, it could get very cold and windy sometimes. Should I build in more shelter? The wall with the...

    New to this community

I would like to introduce myself. I am new to chickens. Just bought a house and the seller left us 6 adult laying hens. We added 3 chicks and then another 6 chicks. I have Wyandottes, RIR, Java, Maran and Americuana. I keep them mainly for the eggs and they are great company while working in my...
