    Damaged foot

How's everyone's Christmas Eve going? All well I hope. Yesterday I was at a family Christmas and didn't get home until late. All I did was fill up waterers when I got home. Today I'm actually out looking at everyone and one of my rooster's feet is deformed and he curls it under while walking...

    Anyone else's roosters do this?

I have several different rooster flocks. My smallest one has a Houdan, a Polish, and four mutt bantam projects. Inside the coop it's about 15x15, take that with a grain of salt as I've never measured, but it's quite a bit bigger than my 10x10 pen, which IS measured. There's three windows open...

    Using liver to stop fighting?

Was speaking with a local chicken owner, and he told me that when his chickens aren't getting along and are drawing blood, to hang up a piece of liver and it gets the frustration out and stops the bloody fights. I have honestly never heard of such a thing, anyone else? Should I give it a shot?

Issues introducing broody hen back in flock

I introduce new birds to my flock quite often, so I'm not new to the introducing concept. Unfortunately, my bantams decided to give me a hard time recently and I'm not sure what to do. I decided I didn't want chicks in my house this time and went with letting the broody hatch and raise...

    Steel wool = coon deterrent?

Went down to my chicken coop today and discovered a raccoon had attempted to dig in the sand to get to my roosters. From what I can see, the sucker took one chomp out of my steel wool I had underneath the sand(which I was using to keep mice out of a small hole...) and left empty handed. No...

    Ameraucanas

What is required to make a chicken an Ameraucana and not an Easter Egger? For a great deal from a local breeder I got a mix of green and blue egg layer hatching eggs, but I wouldn't get to know what breeds they were. About 9 months later I have Super Blues and Easter Eggers, but one of them I...

Winter debate, coop door open or closed?

I was always taught to lock up the coop for winter, never leave the door open, rush in, feed/water, and rush out. No chickens allowed outside until the snow melts next year. Recently it was brought to my attention by another Nebraskan chicken owner, to leave the door open unless there's high...

    Late introduction

I was supposed to make one the other day, but I was busy looking around the forums and forgot. Wasn't sure I even wanted to, but it looks like everyone does so here it goes. About me, I had chickens on and off most my childhood. My grandparents all had chickens, it goes way back to the great...

    Isa Brown not laying eggs

I have one Isa Brown, she's a sweetheart. She hasn't missed a day of laying since spring. She's about a year and a half old. I noticed for several weeks that her eggs were looking a little different, some weren't totally colored, others were a bit wrinkled, and the yolks had little red spots. I...
