So the last couple days, our Lucy (RIR, supposedly about 3 years old) has been staying in the henhouse most of the time (we thought that she was just getting up late, after we'd gone off to work) and I noticed that she has a bit of a dirty butt (feces encrusted in the feathers under her vent)...
About a month ago, I found a person selling 6 Rhode Island Red "laying" hens.
They said that the hens were about 2.5 years old. They don't artificially extend their laying season with lights in the winter, so I expect about another year of eggs from these two girls.

Yesterday I found a paper-thin eggshell under my roosts with a splotch of yolk/white near it. I'm guessing it was from one of the two young pullets that haven't been laying yet but have no idea which one.
Now the anticipation of trying to find out which one is getting ready to lay is just...
When we got this chick, she was your standard "little yellow chick" and, of course, she turned into a white chicken. I figured that she was a leghorn, but she's so small and, last night, I noticed that she has greenish earlobes.
Now I'm really curious.
