    Fighting in established flock

I saw some unusual behavior by my speckled Sussex hen today and would love input on how normal this is. One hen (a Brahma bantam) that is third in the pecking order was dust bathing and a less dominant speckled Sussex (5th in pecking order) came from out of no where and jumped on the brahma’s...

    Round worm infection

Does anyone have recommendations for what I should use for a round worm infection now that Wazine has been discontinued? I had a fecal float exam done by our state extension lab because some of our hens have been lethargic and one came back with a round worm infection (Ascaridia). I was...

Adolescence and aggression in 2 appleyards - new normal or temporary phase?

I would love advice from experienced duck owners. We have 2 female silver appleyards that are 12 weeks old. They have started to get aggressive with our resident flock of 5 chickens (range from 1-4 years old). When the chickens get within 5 ft or so of the ducks, the ducks do this...

Pullet or cockerel? Silkie/easter egger hybrid at 11 weeks 5 days

Hi everyone, can you help me sex one 11 week-old silkie/easter egger mix? We know the first chick is a pullet. I put a photo here for comparison - she is standing all alone in this photo. The second chick (in background of photo on left) has slightly more pink and developed comb, but it is not...

    Egg on feathers

One of our hens laid a soft shell egg on the roost last night. Now she has sticky egg on the feathers on her belly where she sat in egg all night. Any suggestions for how to clean the egg off her feathers? Soap and water works better than nothing but it is really tedious and not coming off easily.

    soft shell eggs during molt?

All, can anyone tell me how normal it is for a 2 year old hen to be laying soft shell eggs during molt? I'm a little worried because some of this hen's eggs this summer had slightly thin shells. She's laying these soft shell eggs at night on the roost. She does this about once every 14 days...

    New Subscriber

Hi BYC, We’ve had chickens just over a year and I just finally joined today to post a very specific question on incubators that I couldn’t find while reading the site. I’ve been a religious reader of BYC over the last year and it has saved me a hundred times over. There is such great info on...

Brinsea maxi advance question - adjusting the temp

Hi BYCers, I recently purchased a Brinsea maxi advance. I’m new to hatching eggs and this will be my first try. I would like advice on whether I should adjust the temperature myself or whether I should trust the manufacturers default settings. I’m doing a practice incubation with fake eggs...
