    Confused about my hens

I locked up my girls tonight, and as usual perform a head count. One of my hens that usually stays away from the other girls at night has decided not only does she want to be next to the other hens, but she wants to put her head underneath her sisters. Why on earth would she do that? I have...

My first chicken loss in 3 years

As always, locking up the hens tonight I always do a head check. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…. Thinking to myself, one hen is a little broody, but where’s the other. As I open the egg hutch to my devastation, my hen is laying on the coop floor and she’s gone. 7, 8 (but 8 isn’t alive). As I find all of my...

What’s the deal with my hens??

My girls are on their 3rd year of laying, and this year one of my girls has done this miniature egg lay twice. Does anyone know why?

Asking for a friend in Georgia

I have a friend that lives in Charlton County in Georgia. She’s got approximately 2 acres of fenced land. She wants to raise some chickens 4-6 at most. Does anyone know of any ordinances or who she should contact? She’s way outside of the city limits which has other ordinances.

    Hard Molting

My poor hen Olympia is looking rather ratchet these days, and she’s the first one to go through a hard molt this year. I’m just waiting for the other 7 to follow behind. She’s so tired at the end of the day, I don’t fuss with her sleeping in a nesting box.

    Rotten Egg Laying

Ok, at first I thought it was a weird coincidence, maybe the egg was bad, even though I actually did the float check and the egg sunk. I cracked it open and inside was completely rotten. Fast forward a couple weeks and the same hen had also another rotten egg, except I just assumed since it was...

    Rats!!!

In getting things out of my shed to decorate for Christmas, my son happened upon a rat in which he quickly killed. Further inspection reveals that it was a mamma that had 6 babies. Newborns to be exact! All of which have been killed. Should I be concerned of others? Expect a male? I removed all...

    Molting and egg laying

The molting in my flock is in full force. Every day it looks like someone has ripped open a feathered pillows and spread it all over the coop and run. On top of that, the egg production had dropped drastically. I know this is normal and to be expected at this time of the year. All of my hens are...

    New to the Egg Collection

So, I know that here in Florida we have very bipolar weather. Is this some thing that would affect the daily egg production? Since about mid to late January my 8 chickens have been giving me about 6-8 eggs a day. I’m good with that, and if it’s less, ok... however, we have had some weeks that...

    Random eggs outside of coop

So, every now and again, I’ll find a lone egg in my run. Once, it looked like someone might have pecked it open. Yesterday, it was just there on the ground by the waterer. How in the world is it ending up outside of the coop that is off the ground??

    Worried

Looked out the window to see my chickens standing statue still. When I walked outside with the dog, within 5 seconds a hawk flew over my yard. I know they are out there, but that’s the first time that has happened. I don’t want any chickens to go missing.....

    The largest egg yet

Not sure which of my girls produced the largest egg yet, but it’ll be interesting to see if it’s a double yolk. The green is the usual size or a little smaller... today, this monstrosity happened.

    Stopping the aggressive pecking

I’ve mentioned this before, but now it’s like a game for my only Rhode Island Red. I’ve figured out when I let them out in the morning to just spread some mealworm treats and I’m safe. Now, just walking into the yard, she runs toward you, most of the time I have to just pick her up. Today when I...

    Pullet sounds

Have you ever heard your girls make a honking sound? Like a squeaky toy? Just curious, cause that was a new one for me today.

    Should I be doing more?

I’ve got one of my pullets that hasn’t given any more eggs since Sunday before Christmas. That was her first egg and since then her last. She’s eat, drinking and doing all the things that seem normal. She doesn’t seem to be in distress. I’m putting out more oyster shells today, and the only...

    What the Chicken?!?!?!?!

So.... my one and only Rhode Island Red, has recently gotten very PECKY with me, and I’m not sure why or what to do about it. A couple of mornings ago, she bruised my arm while I was trying to prop open the run door by pecking me twice. This morning it was like a sneak attack on the back of my...

    My very first eggs!!

Out of my 8 hens, five of them are 24ish weeks old and only 1 of them has started laying. I now have 2 eggs in my basket and I’m very excited for the others to start laying. My 3 younger hens (Barred Rocks) are 21/22 weeks old. Anyone know when I can expect them to start laying? I’m attaching...
