So we have had an incident here. Its been cold, down to almost zero. We were busy and hadn’t been up to our coop in a couple days. Our power source had blown and our heat lamp on our brooder as well as our water heaters went out. We lost 2 sebrights and one of our new 18 week old chicks...
Hi, so I have 6 month old female muscovies in with my chickens and everyone gets along. About 4 months ago my silkie hatched 4 eggs and we separated them into a look but don’t touch brooder. I’ve done some introductions that went just fine with the rest of the flock except the ducks keep...
Hi everyone, we are just at the beginning of winter here in interior british columbia, lst year we got down to -13f for a couple of weeks. I’m looking for some inexpensive ideas for keeping my flock watered. Last year we made a cookie tin heater which is basically a lightbulb inside a cookie...
So this little thing is a 15 week old silkie we hatched from our two silkie male and female. Dad is a mess of a breed with the straight comb and the leakage and mom looks a bit better. I think its a boy but curious to know what other say as well. It has the dads straight comb but there has...
Introducing Baby Blue! I had the impulsive decision once my 1 year old silkie went broody for the 3rd time, to stick her own egg under her (our rooster is also a silkie). Yesterday was day 21 and last night I peeked under her, and found half a shell! I poked around a bit more and found the...
My son just brought this Sebright to me with a bloody foot. Upon closer inspection it looks like this is a bigger issue. Is this leg mites? She is holding the one bad leg up and is now laying down to eat. She had blood on her beak.
My little buff silkie Tina, was broody for most of March. She broke on her own, and life went on, but she was back in the lay box all day today. I thought maybe she was egg bound so we went and got her out and she growled and stayed in the lay position. Once we got her in the run she stood up...
Maybe I have rooster paranoia, maybe i’m a chick sexing guru. I’ve never been wrong. I actually started to think this around day 3 or 4. Let me know your thoughts! The chick was 2 weeks on friday. Also, does s/he seems a bit skinny for this age?
I have a silkie rooster who literally almost died from wry neck 2 months ago. I also have a banty black wyandotte rooster. The silkie is a bit of a force and the wyandotte (chunky) is the biggest scaredy cat rooster you ever saw. Twice now I have caught the silkie pinning Chunky in the corner...
I’ve had this egg sitting under a broody hen for 23 days. Its always had a weird air cell that now takes up half the egg. Whatever is inside it is alive. My gut tells me it needs help. I am terrified to help at the same time. Please tell me what to do! I believe it has internally pipped...
This pic is from May 14th, I would say the air cell takes up the whole bottom half of the egg now. However, I still see movement! I estimate this egg is about day 21 today. Anything I need to do? This is under a broody hen.
I’m so lost. This egg is day 27. I put it on my calendar when I stuck it under my hen. I candled it last night before removing it and it was still moving, a lot! So I put it back. The silkie who laid this egg has VERY hard shells. But it hasn’t pipped yet. It takes up the entire egg. The...
Should I remove the egg? We candled on day 20 and the one that is about a week or so behind had obvious movement and this one did not. It was just dark with the air sac still in tact. Should I remove and candle again? I would rather not open it up to see the dead chick but I also want to be...
My broody hen has been sitting on an egg for 21 days as of tomorrow. The egg biologically belongs to my two silkies but we moved it under her since we had already removed her eggs and they weren’t fertilized. She is my only full sized chicken. I have 6 other bantys including 2 roosters...
I have a 9 month old silkie pullet who is sweet, becoming a hit more assertive, but also not the brightest. Its pouring today, the coop has a large covered area as well as the chickens can go right under the coop. There is a small run on once side where the little silkie girl has spent some...
Things get boring in quarantine. One of my pullets has gone broody, we removed all her eggs when she first went because our roosters are both bantams and she is a big girl. I went to clear out eggs the other day and one of our silkie girls had laid. I stuck it under the broody gal. We’ll see...
First of all, no internet bullying. I ended up with 2 roosters which is fine, I love them to bits and even syringe fed one in my house for a month a brought it back from death’s door. He he is a happy and thriving little roo now. My issue is that they crow very early, 4-5am and probably about...
Symptoms started a few days ago with holding his head to one side and we went in last night and his head was completely upside down and on the floor. Brought him in, syringed some water in and he ate a bit and slept in a kennel overnight but today he is not eating. He is holding his head up but...
As far as I know, these 2 were laid at the same time! Prior to this, about 2 days ago she spent half a day in the nesting box with no results and nothing since until now. The small one has no shell. She’s about 22 weeks and she has been laying for 4 weeks now pretty consistently.
This is my 15 (?) week old golden sebright. She likes to crow sometimes. I was told that she would be purple combed. Does anyone see any rooster signs here or is this gal just crazy?
