hey there!
i’ve had hens for a few years now but just added a rooster to my flock of 7 hens. i’m doing it because i want chicks.
i’ve never raised chicks or hatched eggs. how does this process work?
how do i know which eggs are fertile?
will the hen go broody naturally?
what do i do once she...
Hey there,
I have a chicken that is moving slow, not jumping up to the roost at night and not eating much during the day. She doesn’t seem sick or show any signs of sickness other than just being lethargic and abnormally slow to move around, has her tail down, etc. any ideas?
I’ve noticed a couple of my chickens are sneezing and having nasal discharge.
They otherwise are acting normal, moving around a lot and eating/drinking like normal. It’s been about 2 weeks now, I’m sure it’s just circulating through the flock, but I’ve also noticed they aren’t laying as much as...
My chickens seem to only be sneezing at night. Otherwise they seem totally fine, should I be concerned? I don’t see any congestion or watery eyes or odd behavior
I went into the coop tonight and most of my hens were sneezing. They seemed fine otherwise. Is this something I should be worried about? Anything I can do to help if it’s a respiratory illness?
my coop is very well ventilated and I recently cleaned it out, I change their water regularly, etc.
Hi there,
I live in Texas and we are about to have below zero temps with blizzard like conditions. My coop is dry and ventilated, but I bought a heat lamp for them at night. It’s supposed to be -5 for a few nights in a row.
is this a good idea? And it so, how far should I keep it from them so...
Hey there,
I just introduced two new hens to my flock. I have plenty of space, two different food and water stations set up, but one of the new hens just stays up on the roosting bar or on another high area away from the other hens to avoid getting pecked. She doesn’t seem to be even attempting...
Hey everyone! So I recently bought a leg horn/Easter Egger mixed hen. The lady I bought it from said that the hen laid blue eggs, but I have had this hen for about three months and all of her eggs have been white in color. Then, the other day, I went outside and noticed that she laid a very blue...
Is this just molting? She is about 1.5 years old and has been slowly losing these feathers since about September. It’s getting progressively more featherless. Any help is appreciated!
She seems to be acting completely normal. Eating, laying eggs, not lethargic.
I have a 4-5 month old Easter pullet (my fav chicken for sure), and recently my flock had a case of dry fowl pox. The Easter Egger got a few spots around her eyes, and because she has a really feathery face, they started getting so irritated that one of her eyes was almost swollen shut and had...
I just walked out today and noticed one of my chickens had these spots in her comb. She seems normal otherwise, but these look concerning. None of the others have them yet.
So, one of my hens that normally is an every day layer hasn’t laid an egg in two or three days (they’re all cinnamon queens just under a year old). None of my chickens are acting like they are egg bound, and I checked their vents and everything looks normal. Does that happen sometimes? Or should...
This is my first time owning this breed, and I can’t tell if this pullet is a male or female. I know the tail feathers seem long, but I’ve also seen lots of other ameracauna hens with more pronounced feathers. The guy I bought it from says hen.
So, I bought this chicken about 2 months ago as a pullet (it should be around 4-5 months old now) and the guy swore to me all of his birds were hens. Well, I came out this morning and it was crowing! It had never done that before, and only did it a couple or times. Does it look like a rooster...
Hey there! I have 5 hens, 3 of which are laying age. Two of them have combs that lay over to one side like this. Their combs have been this way since they been old enough to lay (the last month or so). However I read online that a “droopy comb”
Is a sign of illness?
They seem completely normal...
So, it’s hot right now in Texas.
Over 100 everyday. I’ve made sure to supply plenty of water (changing it twice a day, adding ice to the water) and provided a pool with a big cube of ice everyday for cool
Water. Plus, my run is covered so lots of shade. I’ve done all I can.
but I had a hen...
