A week or so ago I noticed blood poo in coop. I started adding corrid to water and couldn’t figure out who it was coming from as they were generally all acting fine and trying to inspect them works on a few who let me pick them up.
I noticed our polish rooster acting a bit more lethargic last...
Our polish rooster who is 5 months has hurt one of its legs. He can’t stand on it and has resorted to dragging it around when he hops on his other leg. I’ve not noticed any breakage and it’s like he just can’t move his toes forward to stand on. Tonight now he’s gotten some swelling on the...
I have a hen that was added a month ago and has taken lead of the pecking order. She wasn’t letting the other hens up the ramp at night to roost so I was having to go out there and move her out of the way so they could go in. (They have an automatic door and didn’t have any issues before she...
I trimmed this darling silkies behind today if some poop and while washing her up just noticed her eye...didn’t see before with her hair.
Never mind neosporin and she’s slowly opening .
I ferment and I currently put their food in dog bowls, which usually ends up with wood chips in it from the chickens. I do wash them out every night as well.
-looking for ideas to get off ground, maybe a metal top chicken picnic table?
-what about going into winter and freezing
My silkie hens either lay to the left or right of the nesting box. As silkies, they don't like to roost either and would rather they lay eggs in a cleaner area like the nesting box. I've put golf balls in there as well and no go. Here is a pic, should I change the nesting area up some how?
I have 6 silkies. At bedtime 3 pile on each other in one corner and another 3 pile on each other in a different spot. I’ve let them be and not forced or tried to get them to roost. Is this okay or should I step in and encourage roosting?
My chickens are going on 6 months old. Since I received them as pullets I’ve given them fermented food.
Last week we were gone for 8 days so had someone taking care of our animals and I just did dry food for the chicks instead of having someone do fermenting.
A few things I noticed when...
I finished the walk-in coop and attached run 2 months ago. I have 6 silkies and the run is 7x12 so they have plenty of area. I'd like to let them out to forage more by the woods area behind the coop, but we have hawk's nest nearby so it's a no go.
I am brainstorming ideas of a collapsable...
We have 3 silkies from one breeder who are going on 20 weeks old (brought home at 16 weeks). We also have 3 silkies from another breeder at around 14 weeks (brought home at 12 weeks old)
The older 3 go into the coop every night and every night the youngest 3 I have to put into the coop. There...
Finishing up coop and starting run....finally.
Living in Wisconsin I’d like to do a roof but the pitch would mean losing stand up space in the run on the back.
1. Create a shallower pitch so can stand up and invest in a snow rake?
2. Don’t roof at all as we had rain last night and it hasn’t...
It’s pouring here today and working inside and see some water bleed on window trim inside coop.
Note: I have not yet caulked or painted around window.
Structurally, around the window, will caulking prevent this or am I missing something I should do for water bleeding inside?
I have tar papered the sheathing but did not put it over the ridge area. Is this something that should be done for moisture? I have kept it open for air to escape up top as this will have metal roofing and a ridge cap.
Getting silkies next month and want to structure coop 6x7 for best layout.
Since they don’t fly, any recommendations for poop board structure? Just put on floor with low roost?
If I built a walkway to window so they can look out, would they even use?
I want the option to stain the exterior of the coop.
If I side with 1/2' treated plywood (will paint inside coop), then go over the plywood with the dogeared fence pieces, do you see any issues with this?
Not adding any vapor barrier or tyvek
