Hardware cloth in soffits

I don’t have much room to work with...is this little opening something to button up tight?

I attached to top of wall but that is all so far...I am having trouble getting leverage to attach to under roof

Easier to put it on the outside, IMO.
But doesn't look like you have a fascia on the ends of your rafters.

I ended up winging it as secure as I could with screws and washers

Sometimes good enough is good enough. Still better to have it covered instead of uncovered, "just in case."
