    Help? Vent gleet?

Is this vent gleet? I noticed yesterday that she looked "saggy", her feathers were parted and I saw she was red and swollen. Feels like a tennis ball. There was a bit of dry poo on her feathers. I washed her in Epsom (this is after). I'm adding ACV to the water. Anything else? She's acting normal.

    Broody hotel

They just won't break outside, 90's if not 100° most days. I'm leaving for vacation so they'll be in the basement with a fan for the next 4 days. Really hoping this works, they've been broody for weeks!!

    Help with heat wave

I've had to close off the coop because of excessive heat. It's 100+ in the coop, even with a fan. Here's my issue..... I put two milk crates, with nesting pads, in the covered run. They have been in panic mode for hours, trying to get in the coop. I'm assuming they will eventually just drop...

    Help me navigate- 4 broodies

Help! I have 4 broodies and 1 crate. I have one in there currently and I guess I'll just rotate them through. My question is for nighttime.... should I kick out the broody girls and block the nesting boxes? Hoping they'll go to roost? All day today, 🤪 I kept the broodys out in the run and...

Do chickens shed their "winter coat"?

I have a Laced Wyandotte that I can't tell if her feathers are getting picked because of bullying or is she shedding/ molting after the Iowa winter. Her down is so thick underneath. I've seen her pick there, as well as others while they are just laying around. I have a cokoo maran that is...

    First loss

We have experienced our first loss. We left town for 4 days and had the neighbor feed and water. No blame towards her at all but sad that we couldn't help her. No clue what happened. RIP Nory.

    Vetericyn or neosporin? Pecked Broody

Ugh, I have a broody again, noticed yesterday and decided to deal with it today. Since she is refusing to leave the nesting box that EVERYBODY uses, there were 3 in there the other day.... they have pecked her comb and I found her today with a bloody head. I have her separated in a crate in the...

    Trying not to freak! -40°F!

Why do I live in Iowa? :idunno Saturday and Sunday, we'll be lucky to get above -5°F, regular temperatures. Sunday, our HIGH will be real feel of -25°F. Overnights, -40° 's, real feel! I've increased ventilation, added insulation in the coop along the walls next to the roost bars hoping that...

    Need advice on humidity, please

Having issues now that's is winter in Iowa (first one) I have 12 birds in a 4x6 coop. Yes, probably a few to many. I have about as much ventilation as I can without opening windows.. but they are at roost level. I cut 2 holes at the top end of the coop today, I could make a bit bigger but I...

    Broody in December

Edit *is this enough room?* I've got a 8 mo old Wyandotte that has decided to go broody. I'm planning on getting a crate today to break her. It's going to be 4° overnight here in Iowa in a few days. My question is.... will she be OK, on her own? She won't have others to warm up next to. The...

    Box opening size

I'm wanting to make the nesting box opening a little smaller since it's at coop floor level, they keep kicking the poopy shavings into the boxes, especially since the shavings are thicker for winter. The box opening height will go from 10.5" high to 8". Is that sufficient? It seems like they'd...

    Pooping in the drinking water

I have a metal double wall waterer in my run. I have one chicken that insists on sitting up on top but then she's constantly pooping in the water. Any ideas on what I can do to stop her? It's about to turn really cold in Iowa and I really don't want to be cleaning it multiple times a day.

    First egg/ egg EATER!

My pulleys are 18 weeks, I've been checking multiple times a day. Today I was out... we heard the egg song. Looked and looked.. nothing, but my olive egger was in the box. I figured she hadn't actually laid yet. About an hour later I saw my other olive egger running with an egg in her mouth...

    Should i open nesting boxes?

Good morning. I have 9 pulletts @14 weeks and 3 @11 weeks. I don't want to open the nesting boxes too soon due to the younger. They all are roosting at night but they do all go in the coop during the late morning and "nap" in the shavings on the coop floor. Advice appreciated.

Ready to switch to all flock feed question?

I have 10 pulletts at 9 weeks and 3 at 7 weeks. My older should be ready to switch to all flock, correct? My question is: if I switch now, is it ok for the younger to be on all flock...or do I wait 2 weeks until the younger are at 9 weeks.

    Flying things... head flicking

Help! My pulletts have been out in the new run for almost 2 weeks now. Every evening the bugs get so bad, the poor things just sit around, flicking their heads and scratching their faces. Mosquitoes, big gnats, little gnats.... I put vanilla scented human bug spray on them and see no results. I...

    Hen in charge

My pulletts are about 8 weeks old. I have one (I don't know is she's a hen or cockrel yet) that rounds the other 9 up at night and sends them to the coop. She'll go in and come back out to make sure nobody is left. Is this typical hen in charge behavior or do I have a cockerel, you think? I...

    Gnats! Who knew?...

We have gnats bad. I didn't really think anything of it until I was out tonight and noticed everyone (pulletts) shaking their heads and scratching faces. From what I quickly read.. permethrin spray? Is that still the best option?
