    Not RI Reds?

Hi everyone. I hope the summer is off to a great start for you all. About 7 weeks ago we got these chicks from a local supply store (not a chain). When we bought them we were looking for RI Reds, because we're interested in the egg production for our family, but the sales-person wasn't sure...

    Housecats and chickens?

We have 6 hens that are 14 months old, and 2 kittens that are just 16 weeks old. We're hoping the cats will be good mousers since they were feral when we got them. The cats & hens haven't been allowed within reach of each other yet mostly because we aren't sure who is at more risk, the...

    Could it be spring??

After months of frozen ground and snow... a long past due dust bath!! That's 5 pullets. ok, more like a mud bath, but it's all good. They wallowed for almost an hour.

    Which end first?

Please help settle a bet. We all know that a typical egg has a pointed end, and a round end. Which end comes out first when they're laid?

    Terracotta heater

Well, I decided to build my own heater for their 3 gallon plastic waterer. It was easy and cheap to build. It's a 40W bulb in a flower pot with an inverted galvanized pan bungied down on top. I added pics of the components to my web page .

    Flaking beak?

She's a 26 week old Columbian Wyandotte. We think she may have layed a few eggs, but has stopped. Two weeks ago we noticed her beak seems to be cracked, or flaking. Do beaks molt?

    Red tail hawk swooped in

We were out in the yard Sunday afternoon just cleaning the coop and other chores. Our 6 pullets were hunting for bugs in the lawn. At one point I stepped into the house and DW stepped into the tree line at the same time. Almost instantly one of the girls screamed a ba-GAWK! I spun around...

    Practice egg

We have 2 Leghorns that are 19 weeks old. One of them started laying 2 weeks ago, and the other started 10 days ago. They've each layed everyday since they started. After hearing the second egg song this morning we went out to collect the eggs, and found these.

Ear lobe color and egg color?

I've read various posts here that predicted egg color based on ear lobe color. Is that a reliable predictor? We have 16 week old pullets... 2 that look like leghorns, but they have pale green ear lobes 3 that are probably production reds, but 2 have white ear lobes Should we expect...

Could this be an EE, or maybe a Brahma mutt?

We got our 6 chicks from a friend who bought 50 of various breeds, both layers and meat birds. We really had no idea what breeds we got at the time. We've since learned that 3 are probably production reds, 2 are leghorns, then there's Phillip. (our sons named her, he's got a weird sense of...

    Do hens grow spurs?

Sorry for the really newbie question. We have 6 chickens that are about 12 weeks old. We thought they were all hens, but one of our Leghorns is starting to grow a stub where a spur would be on a roo. Is this normal for a hen, or should we expect to hear crowing at some point? I can take some...

    Wet mulch bath??

It rained through most of the day here, but had stopped by the time we got home from work. We've been letting the girls range after work and today was no different. 10 minutes after letting them out I heard them in the planting bed under our front windows. I peeked out to find them all...

Moved to the coop, now biting?

We have 6 EE's (at least we were told they're EE's) that are about 11 weeks old. We got them when they were 10 days old. They've lived in a brooder in our basement until 5 days ago when we moved them to their new coop. They seemed fine with the move, but 2 days ago one of them (named Trouble)...

    Does tail position mean anything?

Our girls are about 11 weeks old now, we have 6 EE's. We moved them to the new coop a few days ago and allowed them to range for a couple hours today. Ranging went great, and they returned to the coop on their own at dusk. While they roamed the yard I noticed that their tails were all...

    They won't hold still

They're so busy it's impossible to get a picture, but I had to post this one of one of our EE chicks.

    Hello from NH

Hello, We just got 6 EE chicks over the weekend from a friend of ours who owns a nearby farm. So many of our neighbors have chickens that we thought we'd get in on the fun too, even though we know virtually nothing about keeping chickens. The chicks are just 2 weeks old. We were a little...
