I have decided to get some Guineas, largely for tick control but from past experience with my MIL's Guineas I seem to remember they were great watchdogs .... would let you know when strangers were around.
Question #1 ..... Since they will be free ranging how do I keep them close to home? I live...
12 - 13 month old Black Australorp kept with 8 other hens of different breeds. Food has been Egg Maximizer 21%, small amounts of scratch and treats such a meal worms, apples and fresh green beans. Coop is 40 square feet and yard is 625 sq feet.
We have not noticed any behavior changes but the...
The bottom line is simple ....... how well do the plastic feeders and waterers hold up compared to galvanized?
I need to buy four of each and the price difference is substantial. However, I do not want to buy something that will be junk after a year or two.
Thank you if you can help.
My White Leghorn rooster is pretty rough on my hens and I suspect he is the cause of three of them losing back feathers. My mixed flock of 9 is about 13 months old.
Are all roosters likely to be this rough?
Will the hen's feathers grow back if he is traded out for another rooster?
I love the sound of a rooster crowing BUT.......
My rooster crows around the clock and frequently. Is there a way to get him to stop crowing constantly?
I have always used heat lamps with a large carboard box for baby chicks. But now I have built a 6ft X 2ft X 2ft brooder for the next batch that will hatch in two weeks.
Will one of the "flat screen" heaters work to replace a heat lamp in this brooder? There will be anywhere from 16 to 40 baby...
We gather eggs twice daily ...... once when we let the flock out in the morning and again when we lock them in at night.
This morning there were two eggs ...... one had a hen on top of it and the other was in another nest alone.
The temperature inside the coop got down to 23.9 degrees...
I am expanding to four different coops with four different runs. It would save money and space if I placed the runs side by side and they shared the fence between.
Is this a good Idea or bad .... why?
The farm and garden store was out of Chicken starter/ grower feed. My fiance brought home gamebird starter/ grower because they told her it was the same.
Can our baby chicks be fed gamebird starter/ grower?
Thank you if you can help.
18 of 22 eggs hatched and all are in in brooder doing well.
Of the four remaining eggs two have shown no activity and two have pipped through and began to crack the shell more. However there has been no activity for the past18 hours. Humidity has remained between 82% and 86% and the temp is a...
It's day 21 and my eggs are beginning to hatch. 4 out of 22 eggs in a Nurture Right 360 incubator so far. As these chicks hatch there is less room for them to move around. Should I open the incubator and remove the old shells to create more room?
Also, when should I move the baby chicks to a...
My chicken yard currently has a 4 ft chicken wire fence. Two out of ten hens can fly over it even with one wing trimmed.
If I extend the fence to 6 ft should that stop them from flying over it? 8 ft?
How high or do I need a top over the whole yard?
This is my first experience with a fence for...
The interior of my coop runs as low as 32 degrees this time of year. We gather eggs every evening so none are in the nest longer than 24 hours. Will these eggs still be good to hatch in an incubator after being cold?
Thanks if you can help.
Although I am certain this topic has surely been discussed I could not find it in a thread search.
I am looking for advice on buying my first incubator. After spending countless hours looking and reading reviews I am more confused than ever.
I want it to hold over 30 chicken eggs, be as...
If I use two small coops in the same chicken yard will all of the chickens try to pile in the same coop or will they naturally split into two groups with one group in each coop?
It has been over ten years since I raised chickens and was a member here. Just as it seems many people are, we are getting back to producing a lot of our own food.
Right now I have to build a new coop and, to be honest, the current lumber prices scare me to death.
