I processed the first eight or so of my meaties over the past few days. The had food taken away at least 12 hours prior but had water and a fresh patch of grass. Yesterday I picked one out because he wasn't sitting flat in the tractor. Had one leg cocked out. I was always scared of the flipping...
I noticed for the first time yesterday when my 4.5 week old meat birds were eating that several of them were sneezing. It got my attention, but they didn't otherwise appear stressed or to have any other symptoms. Granted they breathe heavily all the time and lay on their big butts to eat and...
I have one male and one female white leghorn. They are five months old. I had been keeping them separated but put them back together a few days ago. The rooster began trying to mate with her immediately. That night I noticed the back, unattached, portion of the hens comb had been cut off. I...
So I'm down to just one layer now. Started with six unsexed, only two were pullets and were doing well up until they started to lay. One laid very well, sometimes even two a day, a few skipped days, many double yolks. The other laid what I called lizard eggs. Uncalcified, or barely calcified...
I know all about reducing the brooder temp by five degrees each week until your birds are "fully feathered", but these meat birds (my first) are growing and developing nearly twice as fast as my egg layers did. At what age do Cornish X meat birds generally become fully feathered?
Nights here...
I have two white leghorn hens that have only been laying about three weeks. As soon as they started I switched to Layena and started mixing oyster shell into their food. Only on one or two occasions did I get two calcified eggs. Normally I get one good egg in the nest box and a noncalcified egg...
Hey everyone...
In doing a little research on everyone's favorite "I want my own self-sustaining meatie flock", I started looking into parental breeds. What I found was an abscence of White Cornish. Plenty of crosses, but no pure White Cornish.
Is there a source for these? Do you have to...
Is the term "capping" in tractoring chickens when the poop gets so thick it's up on top of the grass, crusted over?
As in, "I move my tractor at least once per day to prevent capping."
This is a "for my information" kind of post....
About 17 years ago someone dumped a load of wood duck babies on me. The momma was killed crossing the road in the middle of town... go figure. The little ones would not eat and all quickly died even though I kept them warm, had food/water, etc...
When you order a mix of chicks from a hatchery, and they have roughly the same appearance right out of the shell, does the hatchery do anything to "mark" them so you can tell them apart at first? Or do you have to grow them out a little, then separate them?
I ask because I'm going to be...
In getting ready for my first chicks I noticed that most, if not all, of the literature talks only about indoor brooders. While I can see the benefit of it(stable surrounding temps), it definitely comes with it's negative points as well. I have noticed a time or two where members here mention...
I know you can find a pretty big range of how many square feet per tractored bird is optimal, minimum, etc. I've found numerous different published values, and lots and lots of opinions, many falling well outside the published ranges.
Of those of you here doing "meat birds" (CX in particular)...
In the design of my upcoming coop I have the floor being hardware cloth(wire mesh). I have a tray that will be the entire width of the coop floor that will fit underneath and will be adjustable as to how far away from the coop it will be. Not the best sentence but let me explain. At it's...
Are Pearl-White Leghorns a hybrid breed like the Cornish Xs such that you can't replace them through your own breeding? I am planning on keeping 3 to 4 of them and am looking ahead to when they need to be replaced, and if I should keep a rooster as well when it gets close to that time.
I am in the process of designing my coop for the 3 or 4 pearl-white leghorns I'm going to be getting. Due to many factors I'm down to having it on concrete, though it will be movable if necessary.
The designs have a totally enclosed coop and an attached "run". Not including the fixtures...
So I've learned that the CXs are cornish males and white rock females, but if I wanted to rear my own freedom ranger chicks, what kind of cross would that be? Are they a simple cross of two breeds, or is it more difficult than that? For that matter are the CXs a simple cross of two breeds, or...
Not sure how I got here, but here I am.
Like any project I undertake I read and read to learn as much as I can before getting going. I see too many catastrophes from people that jump in without looking.
So I've been reading numerous websites, forums, faqs, etc, making my plan to fit my needs...
