    Cleaning poopy eggs

Is there a way to clean poop or dirt off off eggs without removing the protective coating? We want to keep our eggs unrefrigerated, but would prefer not to have poopy eggs sitting on our counter. Or give poopy eggs away to friends. Any advice?

    Early frostbite?

Is this early frostbite? If yes, what are we supposed to do to keep it from getting worse? Vaseline? We live in New England and have been using the deep litter method for the past two months. We have a well-ventilated coop and aerate the bedding every day. Any advice would be appreciated!!

    Strange egg advice

We got this egg today that looks very different from all our previous ones. I think we have a new layer. Could this be a first egg from a French Black Copper Maran? Why the strange texture on top? Will they become darker over time as she gets the hang of laying?

    Water heater

Hi all — The cold weather is almost upon us in New England and I want to be prepared for frozen water. We have a 12-gal waterer (https://overezchickencoop.com/products/overez-chicken-waterer) and curious what folks would recommend. Our waterer is in our run and we prefer not to bring it into...

First Egg -- and it's blue!

After 25 weeks, one of our six ladies finally laid an egg! I can't quite tell if it's from one of our Cream Legbars or our Olive Egger -- any thoughts? It's a bit greener in reality than this picture implies. (I checked the nesting boxes later today and found another one!!)

    Mites -- help!

Our chickens have been reluctant to go into their coop for the last few nights. Tonight we discovered why -- the coop is infested with mites! Help!! What do we do? I've seen everything from Diatomaceous Earth to oil/water/soap, to permethrin. We haven't had a chance to inspect the chickens...

Not going into coop anymore - new nesting boxes

Our small flock is 18 weeks old and has been reliably going into the coop at night since week 6. We have an automatic door, and all six head into the coop at least 30 mins or so before the door closes. Like clockwork...it's wonderful! Our coop has three nesting boxes that we had filled with...

    Is Ladybird a lady bird?

This group has been so helpful in sexing our chickens. And I have one more! This is Ladybird, the Olive Egger. Comb has no pink, but her tail feathers look sorta pointy and curvy. Thoughts?

    Pullet please!

After one of our chicks was clearly a rooster with large wattles and a red comb at only 7 weeks, we swapped him out for a similarly-aged chicken that we really hope is a pullet. Her(?) tail sticks up differently than our other pullets. What do people think? She’s about 10 weeks old. Is she...

    Food in the run/travel

We just recently moved our flock of 6 to their coop and run. They’re 7-weeks old and have adapted wonderfully. We have 6 happy chicks! But we have some questions regarding feeding them: -We have the OverEZ chicken feeder which holds 50 lbs of feed. But our chickens keep spilling huge amounts...

    New food - help!

I have 4.5-week old chicks who have always had one type of starter food. Yesterday I ran out and switched to a different type. They refuse to eat it! I can’t get more if the old stuff till tomorrow (Amazon can only work so many miracles!) Are my chicks going to starve themselves?? What...

    Hardware cloth + landscaping fabric

We are building our run and plan to use hardware cloth + dirt/sand for the bottom of it. Do we also need landscaping fabric in the equation? On top of the hardware cloth and under the sand? Also how often does the sand need to be cleaned vs. changed? I’m trying to understand the daily/weekly...

Giant Splash Laced Red Wyandotte Gender

This is Hillary. She is a giant chick at 3 weeks old. I got her with her sisters and they were all the same size upon arrival at 2 days old. But then she started growing at a much faster rate. She is supposed to be a pullet and seems to feathering out nicely. Can’t see any substantial...

Too much apple cider vinegar in water! Help!

I am new to raising chickens and today one of our 6 chickies (3 weeks old) died suddenly overnight. No signs of illness or weakness in our other chicks. Honestly we're not really sure what happened. To be safe, we put some ACV in our remaining healthy chicks' water to protect against any...
