    What Gender Are These Chicks?

We’ve got three chicks about 7 weeks old. The dad is a Buff Brahma Bantam, unsure of the mom for each. Just curious if anyone can tell gender at this point. Number 1 has the reddest comb and waddle and has been pretty noisy, but still just peeping. Number two is the most independent.

    First Egg from Jersey Giant

One of our Jersey Giants layed her first egg today! What do you think of the coloring? Will she continue to lay them like this, or does it have to do with it being her first? The egg she hatched from was just a solid brown. Pretty cool though. If we get it wet the white disappears and then comes...

    Loud Chicken

We have 10 chickens in total - 2 white leghorns, 2 brown sexlinks, 4 Jersey Giants, and 2 unknown. This past week we have had our first eggs and now we have both white leghorns and one brown sexlink laying and the eggs are amazing, nice thick shells and amazing dark yolk color. The behavior of...

Feed type for new layers and soon to be layers

We have 10 chickens all about the same age and two have started laying eggs in the last week. We have been feeding the Purina Layena layer pellets that I believe include oyster shells in the ingredients for about a month now. All the chickens seem happy and healthy with this feed. However, I...

Getting in the Coop at Night

I have 10 chickens: 2 white leghorns, 2 golden sexlinks, 4 Jersey giants, and 2 wyandottes. They are all between the ages of 8 and 10 weeks old. I put them out in the coop and run about 3 weeks ago. Every night since we moved them out at almost exactly 9 one of the Jersey Giants starts peeping...

    Chickens eating loose feathers

We’ve got 10 chickens ranging in age from 6 to 8 weeks. They don’t really peck at each other and we haven’t noticed any bare spots. Occasionally there is a loose feather and the chickens will usually pick it up and fight over it for a bit, it seems like just for fun. Recently we’ve noticed two...

    Brooder tips and tricks?

I’m new to this and still plenty to learn. I just wanted to get some input from BYC community to see what I can improve on to keep these chicks happy and healthy. Here are a couple of pictures of my indoor brooder. The brooder is 2’x4’. I’ve got a dish of fairly coarse sand, a couple of roosting...

Breed and or gender help appreciated

I’m wondering if anyone could help identify the breed of theses chicks, gender as well if possible. I’m new to this and excited to see these chicks grow, but also curious to know what to expect. We won’t be able to keep any males so hoping to get some info earlier on if possible so we can...

    Intro

Hey everyone, I’m new here but have been following BYC for about 2 months now. We started our little flock by incubating a dozen eggs in a diy incubator made from styrofoam insulation sheets, out of the 12 eggs we had 5 hatch. We ultimately want between 6-8 hens so we ended up buying 6 more...
