Baby got stuck behind the brooder plate. She hatched about 48hrs ago. I don't know if this is related. She was lethargic and unable to stand. I got a bit of chick boost into her, and she has been warming on my chest for the last hour. She has perked up, but is still weak and having trouble...
I have 5 hens who are at laying age. I know my EE and Colorpack are laying.
I also have a Lavender Orpington, Welsummer, and Black Copper Marans. They are all 5.5 months old hatched within a few days of each other.
I thought my Welsummer had started laying-- I got one speckled egg, then...
Ours chicks are 12 weeks old.
We have:
2 Lavender Orpingtons
1 Colorpack
1 Welsummer
1 Black French Marans
1 Easter Egger
One of the orpingtons has always been smaller than the other. I'm afraid the larger of the two might be a rooster, just based on size.
Hi Friends,
The shed that I had planned on using as a coop is no longer an option. My 6 birds are 12 weeks old and need to be out of our garage enjoying the sunshine.
On hand, I have:
1 2x4x12 piece of wood
2 4x8 stock panels
1 roll of 1/4" hardware cloth
4 7ft t-posts
Pieces of an old bunk...
I don't have any pictures yet, but we are buying a house that has an old shed just behind the garage. It looks like it was built as a workshop or a small barn, and the flooring is solid 2x4's all the way across.
Does that need bedding put down?
Should I cover the 2x4s?
It only has 1 window...
These were purchased from Wilco as pullets. I have been having doubts. Their combs started going pinkish at about 4 to 5 weeks.
Cuckoo Maran
Olive Egger
I am working on building a droppings board in my coop. I want to make it in two pieces. A support and then a lightweight removable top box that I can pull out and disinfect/spray down as needed. Does anyone have any ideas of a lightweight, but strong, material for the topper? The size is going...
I am planning, but also flying by the seat of my pants on this. I have never built anything before, so I am learning as I go.
I am using mostly reclaimed wood and restore buys. I did purchase hardware cloth, and ten 2x4x8's for framing in the door in addition to treated wood scraps that I had...
I am building my coop under an existing roof and using one shed wall.
One wall under the roof will be made of single layer pallets backed with hardware cloth. I am also framing behind it using 2x4.
The plan is to staple the hardware cloth to the back of the pallets and then screw the pallets...
This is my (hopefully) girl, Penny. She is the only one who actually seems to like me-- she tries to fly out of the brooder to get to me and likes sitting on my shoulder. Just wanted to share because she is adorable.
Hi all. My 4 birds are about 2 weeks old, and we have some nice weather, so I am trying to figure out getting some coop construction done. We might want to add two more birds before spring is over.
I have a space next to my shed that is basically a small covered cement slab.
The chicken...
I am not sure how old my chickies are-- I am guessing about 1.5 and 2 weeks old. I brought them home on 2/3. The largest of them is a Rhode Island Red and she has all most of her wing feathers. She and the Maran were the older of the chicks still in the store.
I want to add a Silver Lace...
I brought my 4 (hopefully) girls home on Thursday. I think that some were about a week old, and others 3 or 4 days old. Yesterday, we notice that one of the older ones had a large hard chunk of poo on her bum. I looked up what to do about it. I softened it and pulled it off the best I could. It...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new. I got my chicks yesterday.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have four, and I am stealthily considering increasing that number to six while my spouse is not paying attention :p:p
(3) What breeds do...
