    Chicken confused

My 6 year old chicken started acting strange yesterday. Seems confused, bumping into things, clumsy. She is not eating but drinking a LOT. Gave her a cool bath last night and was surprised to see her alive this morning. She did not roost but slept on the coop floor. Her comb is floppy so I...

    Not laying this summer

My 11 chickens laid every day during the fall, winter and spring. Now in summer, only maybe 5 eggs a day! They get high protein layer food, lots of fresh veggies and fruits, meal worms, grit.

    Late molt

One of my brahmas waited to shed and now she is about half naked. Temps in N.C. are dropping fast. This week we will have lows of 23 and 18. What do I do?

Why do they seem to be starving?

My 11 layers have unlimited pellets. Every day they get a handful of meal worms, grit, oyster shell, Crack corn, and any leftovers from our day (we cook fresh food every day, I grind up the cuttings and peels from veggies as well as egg shells, the cores of cabbage, etc.). They have a huge run...

    Winter storm Elliot

Winter storm Elliot is coming to N.C. FRIDAY. The high is 14, low 3. What do I do? My coop is as warm as I can make it. I keep a heat bulb on all day when the chickens are out in the run, not at night when they are in. But 14 and 3 really scares me. What are you all doing?

    Breed?

I have four of these. I was told they are bantoms. They are huge, have feathered feet, are very bossy and not gentle when they peck. They pinch hard with their beaks and are extremely noisy. Beautiful though. About 7 months old, not laying. If you are familiar, give me your thoughts.

Small mound of dirt in my chicken run

I found a small mound of very fine dirt in my run this morning. It was ground so fine it looked like powder. No hole, no evidence of an animal. I'm stumped.

    Changing location of laying

Hi. I have 3 young hen, all consistent in laying every day. They have been using a small coop every day to lay. It has 6 Nesting places and straw. They only go in to lay so it is very clean. Suddenly I am finding their eggs in the large coop where they roost and sleep (and poop). Why would they...

    My coop and run

Mine is very rustic and I will keep improving it, but it works for now. 35 x 15 foot dog run, fence is wrapped in hardware cloth, a tarped area with Nesting coop, a wooden coop still in progress, a playground, pool with spray and fountain, We aren't builders but the chicks are happy and healthy...

    Different coop setup for winter?

Hi again. Looking for advice. I have a nice, big wooden coop with roosts, a large window and a large door. The window and door are securely screened and will have plastic for the winter. Right now, my chickens stay outside for long days in a secure run around the coop. At dark they go to the...

    Newly mature rooster.

New to this...first flock. First rooster. Tonight I could not find my most mature hen. All the flock was in the coop on the roost. I found her alone in the Nesting box. Put her in the coop. The roo attacked her and I removed her, put her back in the Nesting box. She is young and so is he but she...

    First rooster, need advice.

I knew Roo Paul was a rooster, but he is several months old and has never displayed any such behaviors. He is shy, clumsy, bullied by the hens. Today he crowed for the first time! He is so beautiful and not aggressive at this time. What do you suggest? No children interact with the chickens.

    Chicks freaking out

My chicks are out all day in a run, separated from the big chicks...see, not touch to get them used to each other. Tonight I tried getting them into a coop (a wire dog carrier covered with a tarp with bedding inside) and they freaked. Screamed, huddled next to me, tried to get out. I gave up and...
