    What breed are these cockerels?

They were ID’d as cream legbar pullets as chicks, I now know at least half of that statement is false 😅

Calling all Marans experts - Golden cuckoo? Cockerel? 5 weeks

And a follow-up question on genetics.. I have several black copper, several splash, and this one. I only want to keep one Marans roo. If this guy is the one, what will that look like genetically speaking with those crosses? I’m very interested but admittedly also very unknowledgeable when it...

What did Meyers send me? Rare breed assortment

Picked up my Meyers order this morning! I ordered 10 female + 15 straight run of the rare breed assortment, plus the two freebies. All 27 arrived upright! I’ve never had chicks shipped before and was a nervous wreck - the tracking never updated and I was so worried they were stuck in Cleveland...

    Molt, mites, or..?

4 of 21 birds in my flock (each ≈1 year old) are missing feathers at the base of their tail and otherwise looking ragged. Some of the feathers almost look cut? Thinned? They were originally eating Kalmbach layer. Thinking they were possibly picking/eating each others feathers, two months ago I...

Making green eggs (and ham) A Seussy hatch-a-long

Setting 12 eggs due to hatch 8/23, who will hopefully someday fill my egg basket with all shades of green! Dad is this young Blue Copper Marans/EE cross (hatched him from a green egg) - he’s only 3.5 months old, but ≈90% of my eggs have been clearly fertilized the last two weeks before I...

    Are these meat birds? (X-posting)

Bought these as Plymouth barred rocks… don’t think that’s what they are. 🙃 are these black and white gals “gray broilers”?

Hen laying softshell eggs - meat okay to eat?

We have a hen that has only ever laid soft shell eggs (new layer). I feed an all-flock feed and oyster shell is always available, I have seen her eat it. I may try giving her an extra calcium supplement, but if I do end up dispatching her, is there any reason the meat would be unsafe to...

    Not speckled Sussex?

Picked these two up at the feed store, they had been labeled as speckled Sussex. I just read though that SS aren’t crested. If that’s the case, what are these? 😅

Do the sweet roos always go bad?

I have a 9wo roo that has been a love since day one, oddly enough I singled him out as a roo right away too. He always hops on my lap and follows me around like a puppy. His dad (a blue copper Marans) was extremely docile, not at all aggressive or dominant. Is that a “trait” that could be...

Genetics questions - Blue Copper Marans rooster crosses

Trying to figure out which roosters to keep based on genetics. The two I’m deciding between are both crossed with my BCM rooster, one from a blue egged EE and one from an olive egger mix. Future potential hen crosses for either of them: Blue and green egg laying legbar mixes Blue and green...

4 week old lavender orpingtons - hens or roos?

I have two lavender orpingtons - one is feathering out a bit more slowly than the other, though they both have been much slower than other breeds I have of the same age. Legs look the same, hard to get pics but one comb may be slightly larger and pinker than the other. Any thoughts?

This chick is almost four weeks old, hatched from green egg. Dad is a blue copper marans. Photos of mom below, any ideas on her breed(s)? Mom has some dark spots on her comb, the chick’s is completely dark.

First time broody hasn’t left the nest

I have a first time broody Brahma. After not leaving the nest all day/night Tuesday, I placed eggs under her Wednesday. I haven’t seen a single “broody poop” that I’ve read so much about, does this mean she hasn’t left the nest once? Is that okay? Or should I encourage her to eat and drink?

Breed/gender/who’s yo mama - chick ID

Hatched some of our own chicks for the first time! Dad to all is a Blue Copper Marans. Chick #1: What am I? Slightly feathered feet, hatched from a dark green egg, my mom is all gray with a gray floppy comb. Am I a boy or girl? (The one with the spots around it’s eyes in the background is...

How hands off can you be with eggs under a broody?

Just put some eggs under a hen that hasn’t laid or left the next box the last few days. I haven’t hatched under a broody before. Do I ~have~ to candle the eggs? Or can I just let her do her thing?
