Am a little concerned about this one. The coloring looks like silver partridge (?) and I read a lighter breast on that color bodes well for a pullet - but the comb is giving me pause; looks pretty pronounced for a walnut on a girl. What do y'all think?
Last week our neighbor gave us a little 2-day old Welsh harlequin duckling that her daughter brought home but was unable to care for. Judging by its beak color it's likely male (I know this isn't a for-sure way to sex WHs - though the daughter said that, with one exception, this has held true at...
We have the sweetest little 4-month-old cochin/silkie roo who started crowing awhile ago. We live in a city and can't keep roosters due to close neighbors, and have been planning to rehome him when he gets too loud. But... he hasn't! I've read that it usually takes only a few weeks for them to...
We hatched out three isabel ameraucanas, and at 4 weeks old two seem to have bigger, slightly redder combs (like the one on the left) while one does not (on the right). I know it's suuuper early to sex ameraucanas/EEs, but thought I'd post to see if anyone has thoughts and start a development...
Our only purebred bantam cochin that hatched, so we're reeeeally hoping it's a girl. Here it is a 4 weeks. Not much to show for a comb; saw pics of 3-week mille fleur cochin cockerels from the same breeder and they had big pink ones already! Buuut the lack of tail is troubling (though cute as...
I picked up five adorable "silken" chicks four weeks ago. One's an obvious little cockerel, but the others are harder to tell. What do you think? I'll update this post every few weeks so we can get a progression going :)
1) Cockerel? Bigger than the others, with a comb that popped up early but...
Hey all! So our 1 y/o easter egger Mayonnaise makes terrible, loud, grating wailing sounds. Honestly, she often sounds more like a honking goose than a clucking chicken, and you can hear her from a block away. She doesn't do it constantly - it's worse in the morning and/or when she's gearing up...
Hello!
Same old story - chick bought as a pullet turns out to be male. And unfortunately, we can't keep him here in Minneapolis :(
A bit about him: he's nearly three months old, has yet to crow, and is just the sweetest. No signs of aggression with this boy! He likes sitting on your hand, loves...
Our black sumatra, Aceh, is just so gorgeous. But is she too gorgeous for a 9-week-old pullet? So much sheen and long, curved feathers, and she's bigger than her OE, EE, and SFH sisters. I know Sumatra hens can have roostery features, but I'm a little worried Aceh's are a little too roostery for...
Sooo we got four chicks from MPC who turn three weeks old on Monday and who are all supposed to be pullets. But this olive egger (legbar/welsummer most likely) has me worried... anyone out there ever have a chick this age with this much comb development that didn't turn out to be a roo?
This morning I picked up our four chicks from the post office. They're from My Pet Chicken, and one is a SFH! Since the breed is so variable, I'm so curious what she'll look like as an adult. Can you tell what color they'll be based on what they look like as chicks? Also, can you tell if they'll...
Hi all! Last night I put in an order for four chicks from My Pet Chicken who will be arriving in June. It's been forever since I ordered chicks, and last did it back in 2010 from MPC. (I still have one from that batch left, a beloved EE hen who's most definitely a lap-chicken.)
I can't wait for...
Hey guys - I've got a bit of a problem...
I found what I think is a wood duck egg in the water while visiting a nearby lake. So I picked it up, took it home, and put it under my pigeon because I was curious if she could/would cover it.
Well, she did. And she sat on it for at least three...
This morning a hawk swooped in on one of my hens. I was able to pull it off before it killed her (I hope... no obvious injuries, but she is a little droopy), but in the melee, my pet pigeon got scared and took off. I've raised her since finding her as a squab in my yard this spring, so she is...
Hey all,
A friend of mine just got some eggs, and some of them are legbar/marans olive eggers. There are F1 and F2 hybrids - F1 came from legbar hens covered by BC, splash, and birchen roosters; F2 (gorgeous eggs!) came from F1 hens covered by birchen marans roos.
We're so curious what...
Hey all,
My puppy suddenly became interested in the chickens she's shared a yard with for the past 7 months. Two days ago I went outside to find she'd mauled one of my hens (Esme) and this morning she got another one (Knephla). There's no external trauma on either one, but Esme is still...
Hey all,
Yesterday I came home from a trip to find one of my BCM hen very cold and almost dead. Took all night by the fire for her to warm up, and she seemed to recover. Walking around, eating and drinking like normal. Now, about 24 hours later, I still have her inside, but she's standing very...
Hello!
I've looked around at a lot of different threads on here, but couldn't find one that matches the description of my pullets problems, so here goes:
She is about 7 months old, a super sweet olive egger who used to lay just the nicest dark green eggs ever. However, this winter health...
Last night I woke up to suspicious sounds, and went outside to find a raccoon munching on one of my hens (she was sitting on eggs outside the pen). It looks like it took the skin and some muscle off the back of her head and neck. I don't see any damage to the spinal cord or brain per se, but...
