    Molting

When do chickens molt? Do all chickens molt? Reason I'm asking is I have been raising chickens for 5 years now and never had 1 molt. I have nine different breeds. So, is this normal?

    Tylan 50 question.

I have two roosters that always got along great. Until the other day. Long story short, they fought, one has an eye that is now closed most likely an injury. I've read on BYC to use Tylan 50 eye drops. I have also read to put it in his drinking water. I know Tylan 50 is water soluble. Question...

How to go from a 50% hatch to a 90%

I have moved from incubators to letting to broody chickens do the hatching. The success rate has increased to 90% - 100%. I had one chicken sit on three guinea eggs and they all hatched, and another chicken sat on four guinea eggs and they all hatched also. It's funny to watch, the guineas are...

    Using feed from the floor.

Is it ok to reuse the feed the chickens drop on the floor by sifting out the shavings etc.? It seems my chickens waste as much as they eat. I was wondering about scraping up the food around their feeder and sifting out the shavings. I did it once and they ate it like they usually do. Just...

    Check This Out

What you see in these pictures are twins, sort of. One is an EE that came from an ebay auction for EE's 1400+ miles away. The other is a Silkie that came from my Silkies. I know for sure where they came from as I watched them hatch. The Silkie has the black feet and 5 toes. The EE feet are...

Lost power, will they make it?

Very early this morning we lost power for about 6 hours. I didn't know until I got up and by then the incubator was 75 degrees. I placed it with the top off near the wood stove and after a couple hours got the temp up to 97. Finally the power came back on and now all is back to normal. Do you...

    Is this Normal?

This winter it has been in the 20's and 30's during the day, and night time sometimes drops close to zero. My chickens are always in the coop during the winter and I usually get 2-3 eggs from 17 chickens. Today I let them out as it got into the 40's. I ended up getting 8 eggs this afternoon...

    Frozen Ground

Is it ok to let my hens out during the winter? We hardly have any snow and the temps have been in the mid 40's but the ground is still frozen. Is it too cold for them to be out? We live in Maine where it can be really cold but this year we are getting a break.

Did anyone else set eggs today on Valentine's Day?

Curious to know if anyone has set any eggs today, Feb 14th? I have set 1 RR, 3 Silkies, and 8 EE. I would set more but am too anxious to get to hatching this year. So, anyone else?

Any idea what his Grandparents are?

This picture is of my Roo Lucky. Because he was the only one that hatched out of nine. Anyway, dad is a Cochin, mom is a Bard Rock. He has strong tints of blue on his tail feathers and wings. Like his dad he has feathered feet. I'm thinking maybe his grandparents were Ameraucana?

    Rooster sitting on eggs?

Anyone ever come across anything like this? My guineas, two hens, laid 21 eggs in the nest up the loft. They took turns sitting on them while the other free ranged. Then along comes my R.I. and she lays three eggs in the same nest. Now she sits on the eggs and both guineas will go and free range...

Guinea eggs, where did they go?

My Guineas started laying eggs this Spring and I was getting two a day from the two females. Now I'm not getting any eggs and it's been a week. I'm guessing they are laying them in some nest somewhere. Questions are: Do they stop laying eggs for a while? Where would I find the nest, anything to...

Shelf Life of Durvet Vitamins and Electrolytes

I mixed a gallon of Durvet Vitamins and Electrolytes yesterday and I was told that the shelf life is only good for two days. (not this site) Is this true, because that's a lot of waste when your only giving it to a couple dozen chicks. Thanks

Durvet Vitamins and Electrolytes mixing directions for 1 gallon??

I bought a 4 oz. packet of Durvet Vitamins and Electrolytes for my baby chicks today. Directions are vague to say the least. Mostly about mixing for livestock. Does anyone know the correct measurements for chicks? I searched online and got 1 teaspoon per gallon. Another said 3/4 teaspoon per...

Where do you store your eggs before incubating?

The best place for me, I have found is the lower kitchen cupboards. It stays a cool 55-65 degrees. This cupboard is on the east wall, and only gets the morning sun. It's also away from any heat sources ranges, ovens, refrigerators, etc. Yes refrigerators throw off heat on the outside.

How high should a roost be for a Silkie?

I have heard that Silkies can't fly, or at least can't fly far. How high should the roost be for the Silkies? Can they jump up? Or take a short flight?

    Coop Addition Question

I added a 6'x8' addition to the coop. In there I moved about 90% of all the chicken roosts and a few of the nesting boxes. Last night was the first night and no chickens used the new addition. They all crammed onto what little roost there was left in the old part, some went up into the hay loft...

Pictures of my 5 week old out with the year olds

This guy/girl was an accidental hatch. I let him out with the others during the day and at night he sleeps separated from the flock. The flock treats him/her well. The rooster seems to watch over him/her so it must be a she? Lucky scratching with a Guinea. Lucky out with some of the clan. The...

    Do Guineas Make Noise??

Do they make a sound when they are laying an egg? Like a chicken makes a noise and you know when they are laying. I'm curious because it's going to get warmer here (someday) and they are a year old now.
