Can we do meat chicks and dual chicks in the same brooder?

I hatched 50 dual chicks last weekend and bought 25 Cornish cross meat chicks that came Thursday. Can I raise them in the same brooder? I know feed needs to come out at night for the meat chicks, but will that matter for the duals?

Will a heat lamp be warm enough in a barn brooder in 5 degree temps?

My chicks (50) hatched last weekend. I usually move them to the barn brooder after a week. This weekend thru next week they are calling for temps below 10 degrees. Will 2 heat lamps keep them warm enough?

What took my ceramic eggs from the nesting boxes last night?

I have 5 laying boxes in the back chicken building. Four of the boxes had one ceramic egg in them. They were gone today. My chickens are free range and are never locked up, but do roost around the building. What would have taken them?

What did I do wrong? Hatching too early!

I was out of town for 6 days, returning on September 18th. I gathered the 50 eggs and decided to try my new incubator. They were due for lockdown on October 6th, hatch on the 9th. So far 4 hatched Monday (I pulled the turner at that time), 2 yesterday and 3 more are hatching this morning...

    Free Range of Expensive Breeds

Do you or would you free range expensive chickens? Most of my girls are common breeds, but I would love to have some more expensive breeds.

    Guineas surround Fox!

I have been feeding a family of foxes for several months. Not by choice, but because I have been unable to trap or kill them. I have a free range flock with no fenced area, so it was difficult to stop the killing. Well, now that I have fewer chickens, (again not by choice), the foxes are...

What do you consider a good hatch percentage?

My last hatch was 88%. It seems like a pretty good rate, but still 7 eggs not hatch.

    Will my Guinea raise chicks?

My guinea is setting on eggs and as there are no male guineas, no guinea eggs will hatch. The nest looks to have chicken eggs in it too, which should hatch next weekend. Will she raise chicks?

    Shrinkwrapped.......

My humidity has not been over 55% on lockdown. My eggs are hatching, water in tray, 3 sponges along the sides and my humidity will not go up. I had 2 eggs this morning that were shrinkwrapped. I was able to get them out and save the chicks, (I know not to open it, but could see they were...

    Best Fox Bait??

I have been trying to trap a red fox using eggs and some of my dead chickens. He has out smarted me several times now. What is the best bait? Anyone had any luck? What sized trap did you use? I trapped one a few years ago, with some of the dead chicks from an attack of the night before.

    Question on Brooder Temps

I have moved my 10 day chicks into my shed 12'X12'. There is a heat lamp in the corner on a timer to kick off around noon and back on around 5:00pm. The day time temps have been in the 90's all week. Should I use the actual temp as my guide or the "feels like" temp with the humidity...

How to tell the difference in baby chicks? Can you band baby chicks?

There are/were 63 eggs in my incubator. 19 were out of my hens and 44 out of a friends. I marked the eggs when they were set and mine are hatching early as my eggs were collected after my vacation and sat in the heat all week. My friend collected his eggs everyday and kept them inside...

    Egg Turner Question

I have almost 70 eggs in my incubator and hand turning them. I have an egg turner, but it only holds 42 eggs. Is it possible to double stack my egg turner with eggs in the areas between the ones in the turner? Any down side to this?

100 degree heat and hatching eggs?

I am leaving for a vacation and plan on letting my eggs pile up while gone. The farm sitter can put the eggs from the laying boxes in the feed bin for storage, but some of the hens lay in the loft. Will the eggs in the loft be OK in this heat or will they start to grow and then die in the...

How many chicks can a good hen raise?

I have a hen with 8 chicks and just hatched 20 from the incubator. Was thinking of added to her, but wondered what was the max number. What is the most a good hen can handle?

Why do hatching eggs cost more than other eggs?

I understand shipping but that is extra. And I also understand rare breeds or "special" breeds, but do people really pay upwards of a $1.00 per egg for barn yard mixes, or standard breed eggs. I see them on Ebay all the time. Will people pay $12.00 for a dozen eggs plus $15.00 shipping.

Wondering what breed of my chicks.

I order from Meyers some Silver Lace and 11of the brown layers mix. There are 3 black chicks with off white/cream under sides with the tips of the wings are white. They are very active chicks and love my finger nails. They come running every time my hand goes in! They are very cute (OK...

    Silver Lace

A friend went to a chicken swap in Western Kentucky. I asked that she get me some Silver Lace Wyandotte's, if available. She came back with 2 hens and a roo, however they are smaller then the Wyandottes (I think). Is there another breed that looks like a Silver Lace Wyandotte, but smaller?
