Has anyone ever tried dyeing your chickens to protect them from hawks? I saw this article online and thought it might be a cool idea if it works. The logic behind the idea is that if your chicken is the color of poisonous prey (like brightly colored frogs) the hawk will avoid them...
I currently have 1 week and 2 week old keets in a brooder and I was wondering how long do I need to keep them under a heat lamp before I can move them to an outside pen? Mornings have been damp and chilly lately.
the last two days I have found two pretty blue pullet eggs along with my normal medium to large eggs but the only easter egger pullets I have are only 10 weeks old... is it even possible?
I just finished my second hatch. Of the 27 eggs I set I got 21 healthy fluffy chicks. Now the incubator is cleaned and empty and I want to set eggs sooooo bad. I may be addicted.
I've bumped up the humidity from 35% to 56% and I've unplugged the egg turner. I turned it off when it went flat.
Do I need to remove the eggs from the egg turner or just leave them in it? If I remove them, should the eggs be in an egg carton or just lay them on their side? How high should I...
I'm considering getting a dog that will help keep an eye on the chickens and sheep. What I have seen of Livestock Guardian Dogs, they tend to run HUGE and also tend to be long haired and require grooming. Does anyone know of a breed of dog that makes a good guardian, not herder, and is more...
We had a hen go broody but I had no place to put her away from the other girls. There was one other hen who would kick her out of the nest every day to lay her egg. So instead of setting eggs under her I let her sit golf balls taking the eggs every day. She was so devoted to her golf balls that...
I just got perfectly peeled fresh boiled eggs. As I collect eggs I leave them on the counter for 4 days at room temp then put them in the fridge. When i have enough in the fridge for a boil, I wash them up and set them in cool water them put them on the fire. Once they are boiling I let them go...
Im considering building a meat flock next spring. I want large broody mommas for hens to sit eggs each year and hatch our chicks. I was thinking of Orpingtons and Brahmas. Does anyone have recommendations for roosters for a good large meat cross?
My 20 week old BR layed a pretty little pullet egg, then skipped 1 day, then layed an egg, and now she has gone a week with out another. Is she laying normal for a pullet? I don't think she is hiding them. I suspect I'm like any fist time mom and worring over nothing but I just want to make sure.
My 19 week old EE laid her first little blue egg and then she laid one every morning for the next 3 days. But now 2 days have gone by with out an egg and I'm wondering if this is normal.
