4m old Silkie rooster in Jax, FL - see pic

This is the 2nd of two roosters we need to rehome from our late fall hatch. He is 4 m old. Hatched on 10/22. He is a handsome and gentle rooster; he is not crowing yet. I already have a silkie rooster and would keep him if I could but I only have 4 silkie hens and don’t want any rooster problems.

Handsome 4m old Leghorn rooster in Jax, Fl

We hatched this rooster on 10/23/23. So far, he’s kind and dutiful; however I already have enough roosters for my flock. I can take him to a rooster surrender location here; but I’d rather him go to a fellow backyard chicken enthusiast. Let me know asap if you’re interested b/c I need to move...

When should I let mama hen take the chicks out?

My broody hen hatched her 3 chicks on Saturday. I’ve had her in our 2nd coop/run right next to our main coop/run. Mama looks anxious to go outside. I usually let all our chickens out each afternoon but I’ve been keeping mama/babies in and away from the flock. I was thinking I’d let the mama...

Chick day is here I think — ?s

When checking on my broody this afternoon, she was standing a bit and I could see the three eggs. One had a little chip in it, and I could see movement. It looked like there was still a membrane covering the opening. A bit later my daughter went to the coop to place a small/chilled watermelon...

    When broody’s chicks hatch ?s

Saturday will be day 21 that our broody has been on her eggs. She started with 5 and I determined that only 3 are viable. I haven’t candled since last Saturday... so assuming all is well, hopefully we will have some chicks this weekend. This is my first time having a broody with fertile...

    Broody changed boxes ?s

One hen went broody on Saturday. She’s moved boxes a couple times already. I’d like chicks but I’m thinking switching boxes isn’t a good sign.? Today I moved the eggs back under her... I know she had been on the nest all last night and most of today.... but then tonight I found her in another...

Broody hen — best place to keep her?

Been keeping chickens for years but this is the first spring I’ve had a rooster in my flock. I have 10 hens(mixed breeds) and 1 Roo (Lakenvelder). First hen (a EE) of the season is broody. She’s in one of the coop’s three nesting boxes. She’s only 2 days sitting. My kids collected all the...

Could my rooster be attracting predators?

I’ve had chickens for 6 yrs. Never had a predator problem before. Live on 4.5 acres and have let my girls out of their run each day around lunchtime. So from around 1-sundown they are out in our yard/woods. My flock size has always been between 10-16 birds. Never had a loss in six years to...

1st time with Roo — merging flock ?s

I’m not new to hens; but this is my first time with a rooster. I’ve got a flock of 13 older hens (between 2-5yrs old); and a flock of 7 young pullets and 1 Roo (all 14wks old). They are in two separate coops. I would like to go ahead and merge my flocks. 4 of the pullets and 2 hens are...

I think there’s a Roo in my new flock

This is probably the 5th time I’ve ordered from MMM. I’ve always ordered all females....and declined the extra free bird; but free bird was in my box this time. I ordered EEs, WL, and Whiting True Blues. I didn’t ask them to mark them b/c I figured I could tell which breed was which. Not...

Whiting True Blue v. EE chicks ?s

I just picked up my chick order at the PO. I only wanted 4 chicks and so I went in with some friends and we ordered 10EEs, 4 WL, 2WTB, and then the mystery chick. I was planning on keeping 2WL and 2WTB and the muster chick... but I can’t tell them apart other than the Leghorns but I’m even...

Just installed nipple waterer ... will the old gals catch on?

My dear hubby ordered this from a farm supply catalog and installed it today. I've got more hens than I've had in the past and they kept bumping our old 3 gal stainless waterer so it would leak out. I would come and find them upset with no water. So hubby solved that! However, my girls are...

    Egg Withdrawl Safeguard ???

I'm deworming my girls. On several threads, I've read there's a 24 day egg withdrawal period. However I have read on another thread that you do not have to withdrawal following Safeguard. So which is it? Please do not tell me to use DE or ACV or pumpkin seeds. As a misinformed newbie...

When do you know it's time to cull?

Oh my we've been trying to wait it out but most of my girls are almost 3 (this is our first flock of chickens btw) … and I'm getting 2-4 eggs a day from 13 hens. I do not see any evidence of health issues. They began their 2nd molt in September and it went on forever! Here we are in January...

First loss -- 2.5 yr old hen died ?s

We discovered one of our hens had passed this afternoon. This is the first time we have had one die. We found her in the coop. We did not notice she was missing when we let them out of the run to free range today. We did not let them out Sat/Sunday/Mon due to bad weather and treating some...

    Merging chicks in with hens

My 10 hens are all between 18m and 13m old. I have four chicks who will be 13wks old on Monday. They have stopped peeping and are nearly as big as the hens... Not quite but getting close to their size. I've had the chicks in a makeshift coop in our barn and I'm sick of their mess, honestly...

Hen with one eye closed --

Our most beloved hen (16m old) seems to have an eye issue or illness. She is behaving mostly normal … eating and drinking and socializing as best I can tell. BUT she is keeping one eye closed. This started yesterday. It opens occasionally and appears normal. Any thoughts? I did hold her...

If your buying chicks for a broody ...

… and you have to wait to put them under her at night … so when the PO calls and you get the box home … do you tend to the chicks as usual? I would normally: open the box, put them in the brooder, show them the grow gel; and show them the waterer. Would I still do all that? or do I just...

Help ... First time with a broody hatching ?s

This has been a roller coaster! Lots of twists and I'm wondering if there is even a chance any of our remaining eggs are viable. Here's the story: First broody sat for two weeks on golf balls while we waited to get our hands on some fertile eggs. The lady who sold us the eggs encouraged me...

Best way for Broody to raise chicks?

I'm trying to get informed on what to do with my broody and chicks when they hatch. I'm chuckling hearing that old "don't count your chickens before they hatch" playing in my mind … so, my broody is setting in our barn (away from the coop/flock) with 8 fertile eggs. Not due to hatch until...
