I just got these birds from a friend. She said they are Marans, but I have been unable to identify the hen's coloring... she looks part wheaten and part something else! The rooster is definitely a blue wheaten. Here are some pics:
Any thoughts? Comments?
Our Buff Brahma "Treestump" went broody at the end of last month, and we are proud to present her brood of 6 mixed chicks!
The daddy is an Easter Egger, and the various eggs belonged to different hens: 1 RIR, 4 Brahmas and 1 EE.
Here's Mamma with 4 of her peeps:
I *think* from left to...
One of our brahmas went broody yesterday. She is in a nesting box close to the floor and we have four eggs under her. I really don't want to move her, but there are threads that say I should... We only have one roo, and he doesn't bother her, and our broody hen is very defensive when the...
Why is it that hens always want to lay their egg in an occupied box? My Buff Brahma, Endive, has just started laying, and she has to have her box! Endive just jumped right in next to one of our RIRs and wouldn't budge :) This is how I found them this afternoon:
Here's our "bearded lady", Teriyaki. We got her from a friend a few months back and were told she was an Ameraucana. Now that she's laying, I'm not so sure of her breed...
Her eggs are the creamy/white ones! She also has a single comb and grey feet.
If anyone has a guess as to what breed...
I have been noticing that my chicken feed has been disappearing lately- I thought the girls were just eating more. But, my daughter told me that she found about five squirrels in our coop while the girls were out free-ranging! I looked up different threads on squirrels, but nobody posted a...
I am considering adding to my flock tomorrow... as of right now, I have 4 RIR and 3 Ameraucanas (one being a cockerel). I would like to get some Brahmas, possibly 4...
Is there a typical ratio, hen:rooster? If not, would 10:1 be okay? He will have his work cut out for him
Thanks!
One of my RIR hens has been acting funny lately... whenever someone goes to pick her up, she squats and stomps her feet very quickly. Is this a "warning" she is sending us, or are there other reasons?? She has always been very easy to handle and doesn't fight you when you're holding her... any...
My son has come up with a phrase that always makes me laugh... whenever he sees the chickens fighting over a tasty morsel (they free-range all day), he says they are playing "football". One chicken picks up the bug, or whatever it might be, and the others chase her until she eats it or drops...
This is one of our Ameraucanas, Chowder. We think it's a rooster, but s/he hasn't crowed yet. Chowder is 3 months old...
S/he is a beautiful bird, which makes me pretty sure it's a HE... any more experienced opinions??
Thanks
