I have managed to keep my 13 Cochin chicks alive and thriving for 3 weeks! Darned if I can figure out how to post a pic with this new format though. I have so much catching up to do but the lag time is aweful now!

Ok I am nuts!
Craigslist post came across for entire flock of thirty one 9m-1.5 yr old hens.
Owner has to disperse as they have to move to OH in 30 days!
I was first to respond and brought home:
Speckled Sussex (major beautiful !!!)
Black Australorps
Buff Brahma (1 VERY large hen!)
Light...
I was lucky this time. I was in the barn when the morons next door let the dog out off leash.
She headed right for the chickens which were free ranging in front and along side the barn. They came running into the barn to me. Too bad I didn't have a pitchfork in my hand but I ran screaming...
The 2 chicks hatched here by my broody hen are both roosters. Americana hen x RIR/Gold Comet rooster cross. I think they are 5 months old now-
They are not very pretty but I do like the coloring on one- Wasn't a good mix! LOL But the fertile eggs were freebies. Both are gangly, very long...
A friend will be collecting eggs from his Partridge Cochin
and incubate them for me as long as I take all the chicks.
I miss my Cochin hen and he was nice enough to offer-
After losing 3 to hawks, my husband, son and I closed in the area
behind the barn to prevent predators from taking any more.
So, of course I had to replace the 3 I lost..... (=
2 White Leghorns, 1 Delaware, 1 NH Red, 1 Barred Rock
and 1 Barred Rock/Buff Orphington cross. (who is one pretty...
When I opened the coop Friday morning to let the girls out,
missing was my favorite, the Black Cochin Mrs. Bloomers.
Her 2 chicks came to my feet and that's when I realized she
was gone. Have been bummed all weekend ~

I asked about buying a shed to turn it into a chicken coop. Cheapest was a junky
looking thing at $800.00.
He asked the guy who did the roof on the barn what he thought about building a
8x8 leanto style coop off the goat shelter. They wandered around and looked over all the
2x4's, 2x8's...
Just brought in today's eggs.
Hubby decided he would have hash and
eggs for dinner. So of course I asked him if
he wanted to "try" the new jumbo eggs.
He actually got excited when one was a double yolker lol!
Enough to see if the same looking egg from yesterday
would be one too! Yup!

The hawks have been landing nearby in the trees, the turkey vultures
have been circling, and today at @ 3:30 a coyote or gray fox darted
away across the neighbor's back field when we went out to see the
goat. Luckily we must have interupted it stalking the chickens.
Time to stop the 100%...
We have been living here for 16 yrs. In all that time, the neighbor's dog(s) have been
allowed to run loose and one even attacked my son. They have a new dog who they
finally seem to have under control. It took a shock collar and a lot of yelling "Come!"
at the top of their lungs, but she is...
Technically day 22 for the 4 other eggs out of the 6 that did not hatch yet.
Was just out doing barn chores and 1 of the eggs has been crushed by the
hen as she is obviously trying to get the 2 chicks to go out into the other part
to get to food and water. So sweet to hear her cluck to them...
Made egg salad last week for hubby from our "Copper Penny's Hennies" eggs.
He had a fresh garden tomato sliced on it with black pepper.
He e-mailed me from work and said it needed homemade bread to make it
even better.
So guess what is in the bread machine?

My Cochin who went broody was given 6 fertile standard
eggs. Rooster was a RIR/Gold Comet X. Eggs were from
(2) Americana, Red Star, Black Australorp, Buff Orphington, (2) Golden Waynadotts
Just checked and the 2 Americana eggs hatched!
Need to go out with camera!
