Do you have any local grocery stores or restaurants that can give you their green scraps (from when they taking the outer leaves off to make them look good on the shelves.) Ask them if you can pick them up to save them throwing in the trash? I have three stores I do that here in CA plus the...
I am in CA where it is brown in the summer and green in the winter so very little foraging because we have zero rain from May through November. My chickens have a very, very large fenced area to free range in which keeps them safe from domestic dogs, coyotes, foxes etc. I supplement their lay...
This has happened to me three times, each time I was able to persude the dog owners to pony up the cost of purchasing new hens at point of lay $40 each here in CA and the cost of losing my eggs (I sell some and of course eat some) I did not ask for compensation for suffering though I did suffer...
I would put cinder blocks or pavers around the outer edge of the run so nothing can dig under, I have had domestic dogs kill my chickens more than hawks, coyotes, racoons, the electric fence was not strong enough to stop big dogs just pushing it over. I now have a 5ft chicken wire fence around...
Very nasty, it will but will leave a scar that will be a good story, I cut my arm on a broken bottle, 40 stitches, ambulance ride to ER blood everywhere at a public event-scared everyone but me as I didn't realize I had even done it at first or how bad it was (down to the bone). It is my war...
I have had that happen to me 3 times and it is devastating. I billed the dog owners the cost of buying laying hens which here is $40 per hen then I added in the amount of egg sales I lost @$5 per dozen and it took 4 weeks to get back to normal laying pattern after purchasing new hens. (I have a...
What we do is have two traps and if we catch one by its foot, we then put the next trap by its head and place the rat in it, quick and easy when dead we throw it on our hill and the turkey vultures get the carcass
I use the scratch to get them in their pen at night, I have trained them to come to hear chicky chicky with a small scoop of the scratch It works every time.
Mine go nuts for whole grapes, rice, pasta, pieces of meat or the fat from meat (ask your butcher for scraps and fry it up), yogurt...
Congrats to all, only 3 of our 8 are laying, eggs are small but we got a large one yesterday and when I cracked it open today it was a double yolk, tiny yolks but a double non the less.
This is all so eggsiting isn't it. Why didn't we all do this sooner.
Thanks all for the advice, I will order oyster shells, I have been grinding up regular egg shells and giving it to them, they free range for at least 5 hours a day. I am soaking her butt everyday, can't beleive I sat there this morning having my coffe and soaking a chickens butt in soapy water.
Oh no, that doesn't give me much hope. Today I cleaned her up and gave her a blow dry and then I think she laid an egg with no shell a little later so she isn't quite right.
Hi, one of my Buff Orpington's just started laying and she now has pasty butt, I keep cleaning her with warm water but she still seems to have the problem, is it due to her now laying (she started 3 days ago). Is there anything I can do besides cleaning her everyday. Will she just grow out of it...
Hi,
Lottie is right they really make such a ruckus, my partner said I was hearing what I wanted to hear but I think Women know these things, I knew one of them at least was going to lay the sound was so different. The clucking is so incredibly loud and different like they are saying look at me...
Hi Everyone
We have our first egg laid between 11am and 1pm and it came from Hermione the sweet Golden Buff Orpington, I am so eggsited, hopefully the other 7 will start laying soon. They were all out free ranging as usual but she went back to the nest box in the coop to lay her egg so that...
That is a good idea, we have to buy a separate coop for them though, it might be worth the money even for the future in case something like this happens again. Will have to look for an affordable secure one as we have many night time predators here.
Thanks for all the hello's this is a great site, I am learning so much and everyone is so friendly and helpful, when I learn more about uploading pics I will put some up, got to have my nephew teach me. I sure am loving having chickens (except when they dig up my new plants) but all part of the...
Hi,
Thanks for the advice, not sure how we will keep him separated, he goes bonkers if we try and crows his head off. He appears totally stressed when we tried it before but if that is all we can do we will. I will try cutting his feathers though.
Hi,
I am new to the site and new to raising chickens (we had them years ago but times have changed). I need help and advice on how to stop our 8 chickens pecking the once lovely white head of our Polish Bantam Rooster.
We have 8 chickens (2 each of Silver Lace Wynadotte's, Plymouth Barred...
