I may try that. We have a ton of maple leaves that I could throw in there. How many inches deep are your leaves?
I also like the sand idea....but that seems like a lot of back breaking work for me, since I'm the only one doing all the chicken work!
My black Australorp may have an egg broken inside her. How can you tell? And if so, what do you do?
She passed a bit of broken yoke in the nest around 1 p.m. There wasn't much there. I didn't see any shell.
My 6 month old black Australorp wouldn't get off the nest this afternoon and after I scooted her off of it I saw some egg yolk and egg white - not enough for an entire egg. I didn't see any shell. She is out with the other hens now but is just standing there and when I offered them treats she...

Is she getting layer feed? and her fair share? It just be taking her awhile to get the cycle down, I bet she's the least dominant too...it's probably a nutritional problem...you might provide her with a separate area where she can eat well...you can try giving her...
Hi Fellow Chicken Lovers,
I have decided to build a 6 ft tall run with hardware cloth. That decision was settled by other posts! I am going to have treated 2x4's along the ground and the wire will be attached to the 2x4's. What predators might dig under this? How do I prevent it?
Thanks!
My speckled sussex began laying eggs in August. She was never as regular as my other two hens and her eggs didn't get larger as quickly as my other hen's eggs. She was laying maybe 3 or 4 eggs a week for about a month. In September she stopped laying and then one morning I found two shell...
I recently heard a talk about sunflower seeds being good for a chicken's feathers. I notice that mine eat them whole, not like a cardinal or other bird, which cracks it and just eats the seed. I'm assuming this is ok and that it all just gets ground up in their intestinal system. Anybody know...

I'm not sure if it was a Tom or not, but it jumped my 6 foot fence. It was stalking one of my chickens and I scared it away.
I have three hens in a small backyard in a city of 250,000 people. I have a speckled sussex, a black australorp (the biggest) and a golden comet.
I am getting ready to build a new run for my 5 month old hens. My other one was temporary and since a neighbor's cat has discovered my hens I need one with a top on it. What type of wire is best? How large should it be? It will need to attach to my hen house, which is the bottom portion of a...
It is great to hear that this is somewhat normal for a young hen. I'm putting oyster shell out, but maybe she isn't eating it. The other two, who are the same age, are laying very nicely. I got all three of them around April 1st, so they are 5.5 months old now. Raising chickens is really...
This morning I woke up and found two shell-less egg yokes under the perch. My young hen who started laying and then stopped for 5 days must have "dropped" these during the night. Anyone else had this experience? I put out plenty of oyster shell and old egg shells; what causes this? Should I...
Hi,
I have three chickens; one black Australorp, one specked Sussex and one Golden Comet. The Golden and Australorp started laying in early August and are now laying daily. Their eggs are full sized now. The Sussex started laying about a week after them, but still isn't laying daily and her...
Both of those are great ideas. Thanks for your input. I want to keep these gals safe! They have a secure coop at night but I'd like to be able to let them out without giving them free range of the whole yard. I do let them out in the yard daily for several hours to free range.
