We are new to raising chickens as well and read thread after thread here on BYC about whether to heat or not in the winter. We have a 4x4 fully insulated coop that is home to 4 hens. After reading a bunch, we have decided not to put any heat in our coop this winter. So far it has worked out...
It was -2 at our house when I got home from work last night. Our 4 hens were huddled up on the roost for the night and when I went out this morning to open up the pop door and let them out, it had warmed up to a balmy 9 degrees already. A little scratch out in the run and they came out like it...
We have had good luck with this one:

Hi all...we are new to BYC and raising chickens. We got 3 about a month ago and were told they were all hens that had been laying. Turns out that one is rooster, not a hen. He hasn't been harassing the other two hens at all yet and we want to make sure he doesn't. We would keep him, but...
Here's a better picture of red...
She, at least we think she, was bald on her back and neck when we got her a month ago, but has grown most everything back already.
I guess we can stop calling it "it" and change it to him. Thanks for the confirmation!
Any guesses on the breed? We were told cuckoo maran, but not sure I really believe anything the guy we got them from says at this point.
We have been patiently waiting for some fresh eggs...after a few strange noises the last couple of days, we are thinking that it may take some sort of miracle for this one to lay an egg.
When we got our first 3 chickens just over a month ago, we were told they were all hens and had been...
